Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim
69 words
A method of closing an incision comprising the steps of: inserting a plurality of staples into tissue on each side of an incision location; joining predetermined staples from a first side of said incision location to predetermined staples on a second side of said incision location to thereby close said incision there being a distance between joined staples; and varying the distance between joined staples in a continuous manner.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
69 words
A method of closing an incision comprising the steps of: inserting a plurality of staples into tissue on each side of an incision location; joining predetermined staples from a first side of said incision location to predetermined staples on a second side of said incision location to thereby close said incision there being a distance between joined staples; and varying the distance between joined staples in a continuous manner.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
16 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said staples are inserted prior to formation of said incision.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
16 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said staples are inserted after the formation of said incision.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
29 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said staples comprise two legs and wherein said step of inserting includes the step of bending said legs as said staples are inserted.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
26 words
The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of repetitively cleaving adjoining portions of said tissue by downwardly forcing a cutting edge into said tissue.
Claim 7
Independent Claim
62 words
A method of closing an incision comprising the steps of: inserting a plurality of staples into tissue on each side of an incision location; joining predetermined staples from a first side of said incision location to predetermined staples on a second side of said incision location to thereby close said incision, said staples being inserted simultaneously with the formation of said incision.
Claim 8
Independent Claim
62 words
A method of closing an incision comprising the steps of: inserting a plurality of staples into tissue on each side of an incision location; joining predetermined staples from a first side of said incision location to predetermined staples on a second side of said incision location to thereby close said incision, said staples being inserted simultaneously with the formation of said incision.
Claim 9
Independent Claim
80 words
A method of closing an incision comprising the steps of: inserting a plurality of staples into tissue on each side of an incision location; joining predetermined staples from a first side of said incision location to predetermined staples on a second side of said incision location to thereby close said incision, at least some of said staples including hollow crowns and said step of joining including the step of inserting a locking pin into said hollow crowns of said staples.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
80 words
A method of closing an incision comprising the steps of: inserting a plurality of staples into tissue on each side of an incision location; joining predetermined staples from a first side of said incision location to predetermined staples on a second side of said incision location to thereby close said incision, at least some of said staples including hollow crowns and said step of joining including the step of inserting a locking pin into said hollow crowns of said staples.
Claim 11
Independent Claim
68 words
A method of forming and closing an incision comprising the steps of: repetitively downwardly forcing a fluid-powered cutting edge into said tissue with a reciprocating downward motion; inserting a plurality of staples into tissue on each side of an incision location; joining predetermined staples from a first side of said incision location to predetermined staples on a second side of said incision location to thereby close said incision.
Claim 12
