Abstract

Abstract This invention relates to an improved viscoelastic fluid or gel for use in general surgery and also more specifically in spine and neurosurgery and also in surgery dealing with reproductive organs. The invention encompasses the method of delivering to a surgical wound an implant composition having up to about a 21/2% by weight of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and at least about a 0.5% by weight polyethylene oxide (PEO) in a physiologically acceptable mixture.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 20
Claim 1
Independent Claim 53 words
A method of preventing scar formation in sterile parts of the body during and following surgery comprising the step of: delivering to a wound an implant composition having up to about 21/2% by weight of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and up to about 0.5% by weight of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in a physiologically acceptable mixture.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 53 words
A method of preventing scar formation in sterile parts of the body during and following surgery comprising the step of: delivering to a wound an implant composition having up to about 21/2% by weight of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and up to about 0.5% by weight of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in a physiologically acceptable mixture.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 66 words
The method of claim 1 wherein prior to delivery, the implant composition of about 2.5% by weight of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and about 0.5% by weight of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in a physiologically acceptable mixture is crosslinked in order to control retention at the wound by including about 0.25% by weight of dimethyl urea a crosslinking agent and about 0.025% by weight ammonium chloride as a catalyst.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method of claim 1 including the step of: allowing the delivered implant composition to be absorbed into the wound.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 55 words
The method of claim 1 including the step of: preparatory to the delivering step, cutting through the skin and topically applying to the subcutaneous tissue prior to surgical dissection a topical composition having upto about 1% by weight of carboxymethylcellulose(CMC) and upto about 0.05% by weight of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in a physiologically acceptable mixture.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
The method of claim 4 including the step of: removing the topical composition before delivering the implant composition.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 61 words
A method of preventing scar formation in sterile parts thereof during and following the performance of surgical procedures on reproductive organs of a mammal comprising the step of: delivering to a wound an implant composition having up to about 21/2% by weight of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and up to about 0.5% by weight of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in a physiologically acceptable mixture.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 61 words
A method of preventing scar formation in sterile parts thereof during and following the performance of surgical procedures on reproductive organs of a mammal comprising the step of: delivering to a wound an implant composition having up to about 21/2% by weight of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and up to about 0.5% by weight of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in a physiologically acceptable mixture.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 66 words
The method of claim 6 wherein prior to delivery, the implant composition of about 2.5% by weight of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and about 0.5% by weight of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in a physiologically acceptable mixture is crosslinked in order to control retention at the wound by including about 0.25% by weight of dimethyl urea a crosslinking agent and about 0.025% by weight ammonium chloride as a catalyst.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method of claim 6 including the step of: allowing the delivered implant composition to be absorbed into the wound.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 55 words
The method of claim 6 including the step of: preparatory to the delivering step, cutting through the skin and topically applying to the subcutaneous tissue prior to surgical dissection a topical composition having upto about 1% by weight of carboxymethylcellulose(CMC) and upto about 0.05% by weight of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in a physiologically acceptable mixture.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 18 words
The method of claim 9 including the step of: removing the optical composition before delivering the implant composition.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 38 words
The method of claim 6 including the step of: preparatory to the delivering step, surgically accessing the reproductive organs of a mammal and performing modifications to the reproductive organs at the wound created by the surgical accessing step.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 53 words
A method of preventing scar formation in sterile parts of the body during and following spine surgery comprising the step of: delivering to a wound an implant composition having up to about 21/2% by weight of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and up to about 0.5% by weight polyethylene oxide (PEO) in a physiologically acceptable mixture.
Claim 15
Independent Claim 53 words
A method of preventing scar formation in sterile parts of the body during and following spine surgery comprising the step of: delivering to a wound an implant composition having up to about 21/2% by weight of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and up to about 0.5% by weight polyethylene oxide (PEO) in a physiologically acceptable mixture.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 66 words
The method of claim 12 wherein prior to delivery, the implant composition of about 2.5% by weight of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and about 0.5% by weight of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in a physiologically acceptable mixture is crosslinked in order to control retention at the wound by including about 0.25% by weight of dimethyl urea a crosslinking agent and about 0.025% by weight ammonium chloride as a catalyst.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method of claim 12 including the step of: allowing the delivered implant composition to be absorbed into the wound.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 55 words
The method of claim 12 including the step of: preparatory to the delivering step, cutting through the skin and topically applying to the subcutaneous tissue prior to surgical dissection a topical composition having upto about 1% by weight of carboxymethylcellulose(CMC) and upto about 0.05% by weight of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in a physiologically acceptable mixture.
