Abstract
Abstract The present invention discloses dichiral compounds represented by the general formula ##STR1## (R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , Q 1 , Q 2 , Q 3 , M and n have the same definitions as in the description portion of the specification), intermediates for preparation of said compounds, liquid crystal compositions comprising said compounds, and liquid crystal optical modulators using said compositions.

An optically active compound represented by the formula: ##STR132## wherein R 1 is a straight chain alkyl group of 6 to 12 carbon atoms or a straight chain alkenyl group of 6 to 12 carbon atoms; R 2 and R 3 are independently a lower alkyl group of 1 to 3 carbon atoms; R 4 is a straight chain alkyl group of 1 to 8 carbon atoms; Q 1 is a single bond, an ether bond or a --C(═O)--O-- ester bond; Q 2 and Q 3 are independently a carboxylic acid ester bond or an ether bond; M is ##STR133## in which one of X and Y is a single bond, the other is a carboxylic acid ester bond, and all rings ##STR134## are p-phenylene or ring ##STR135## and ring ##STR136## are p-phenylene and ring ##STR137## is 2,5-pyrimidinediyl and X and Y are a single bond or M is ##STR138## in which X is a single bond, and both of rings ##STR139## are p-phenylene; and the carbon atoms with the asterisk (*) denote asymmetric carbon atoms.
