Abstract
Abstract An engine and lubricating oil having superior anti-wear properties without necessitating use of phosphorus-containing anti-wear additives is provided which is particularly useful in automotive, industrial, and gear lubricants. The anti-wear engine and lubricating oil comprises an anti-wear component including benzotriazole or the reaction product of benoztriazole, combined with a formaldehyde-containing component and at least one primary or secondary aliphatic amine, a sulfur-containg compound, a metallic component, and a lubricating base oil.

An anti-wear engine and lubricating oil comprising: a base oil; an anti-wear component comprising the Mannich products of benzotriazole or the reaction products of benzotriazole, with formaldehyde and at least one aliphatic amine selected from the group consisting of primary or secondary amines and present in a concentration ranging from about 0.1 percent to about 4.0 percent by weight of said lubricating oil; a sulfur-containing compound comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of sulfurized olefinic compounds having from about 3 to about 30 carbon atoms, organic sulfides, and polysulfides wherein said sulfur-containing compounds is present in a concentration ranging from about 0.1 percent to about 4.0 percent by weight of said lubricating oil; and a metallic component having at least one member selected from the group consisting of calcium, magnesium, strontium and barium and present in a concentration ranging from about 0.1 percent to about 4.0 percent by weight of said lubricating oil.
