Abstract
Abstract Novel partially fluorinated alkanes having the Formula: ##STR1## wherein each R is the same or different and is selected from the group consisting of CF 3 , CHF 2 , CH 2 F, and CH 3 CF 2 , and R' is an alkyl or fluoroalkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms with the proviso that when each R is CF 3 , R' is not CF 3 (CF 2 ) 2 --, CF 3 CF 2 --, or CF 3 have utility as solvents in a variety of industrial cleaning applications including cold cleaning, dry cleaning, and defluxing of printed circuit boards.

A method of cleaning a solid surface having contaminants thereon which comprises the steps of: said surface with a compound having the formula ##STR4## wherein each R is the same or different and is selected from the group consisting of CF 3 , CHF 2 , CH 2 F, and CH 3 CF 2 , and R' is an alkyl or fluoroalkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and (B) substantially removing said contaminants and said compound from said surface.
