Abstract

Abstract Separating pentafluoroethane from a mixture of pentafluoroethane and chloropentafluoroethane by adding a fluorocarbon extractive agent having 1-4 carbon atoms, and optionally containing hydrogen and/or chlorine, in an extractive distillation zone to recover pentafluoroethane substantially free of chloropentafluoroethane in the overhead product stream.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 88 words
A process for separating pentafluoroethane from a first mixture of pentafluoroethane and chloropentafluoroethane which comprises: adding a fluorocarbon extractive agent having 1-4 carbon atoms optionally containing hydrogen and/or chlorine, and having a boiling point greater than -39° C., and less than about 50° C., to the first mixture in order to form a resultant second mixture; separating pentafluoroethane from chloropentafluoroethane of the second mixture by extractively distilling the second mixture in an extractive distillation zone and thereby recovering, as overhead product, a pentafluoroethane stream substantially free of chloropentafluoroethane.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 88 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 11 words
A process of claim 1 wherein the extractive agent is 1,2-dichlorotetrafluoroethane.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 11 words
A process of claim 1 wherein the extractive agent is 1,1-dichlorotetrafluoroethane.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 11 words
A process of claim 1 wherein the extractive agent is 2-chloro-1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 11 words
A process of claim 1 wherein the extractive agent is 2,2-dichloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 11 words
A process of claim 1 wherein the extractive agent is 1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 11 words
A process of claim 1 wherein the extractive agent is 1,1,1-trichlorotrifluoroethane.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 11 words
A process of claim 1 wherein the extractive agent is trichlorofluoromethane.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 11 words
A process of claim 1 wherein the extractive agent is octafluorocyclobutane.
