Abstract

Abstract A device, suitable for use in repairing a lacerated or severed tendon, particularly a hand flexor tendon, having a flat band body with opposite ends of the body designed to anchor connecting sutures. The device also finds applicability in the repair of lacerated or severed ligaments. Also disclosed is a method of repairing a severed tendon by implanting a flat band device suturing together the device and the tendon to effect an anastomosis along approximated ends of the severed tendon. Further disclosed is a method of repairing a lacerated or severed ligament.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 181 words
A method for repairing severed connective tissue of a tendon or a ligament having an outer surface comprising the steps of (a) providing a device comprising an elongated body having a flat band structure with said body at first and second opposed ends adapted to be connected to at least one needle bearing suture; (b) creating a slot in each opposing end of said severed tissue with said slot being inwardly spaced from said outer surface such that the integrity of the outer surface is not distrupted during the creation of the slot; (c) inserting a first end of said device into one of said slots; (d) inserting a second end of said device into the other of said slots; (e) approximating opposing ends of said severed tissue, bringing said tissue ends into abutting relationship closing said device within said tissue ends; and (f) suturing said tissue and said device together, passing one or more sutures through said tissue and said device along at least a portion of the length of said device, to anastomose said tissue along said abutting ends.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method according to claim 1 wherein said suturing spans at least said abutting ends.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
The method according to claim 2 wherein said suturing is performed along substantially the entire length of said device.
