Claim 1
Independent Claim
181 words
A method of performing a myringotomy and positioning a resilient otological vent tube having a distal end and a proximal end in the resulting myringotomy incision comprising, (a) providing an otological vent tube of predetermined length with an axially extending central lumen, and providing a distal flange in the form of a truncated cone having a truncated conical surface at a distal end portion of the tube, (b) supporting the otological vent tube on a shaft having a conical tip portion with a conical surface sized such that the truncated conical surface of the distal flange remains substantially continuous with the conical surface of the conical tip portion of the shaft during positioning of the vent tube, (c) directing the shaft and the shaft supported otological vent tube against the tympanic membrane such that the conical tip of the shaft punctures the tympanic membrane to form the myringotomy incision, and (d) penetrating the myringotomy incision substantially simultaneously with the truncated conical surface of the distal flange to distend the incision and permit smooth passage of the distal flange through the incision.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
74 words
The method of claim 1, further providing a telescoping sleeve on the shaft to maintain the vent tube on the distal end portion of the shaft member in a predetermined position relative to the distal end portion of the shaft when the myringotomy incision is being formed by the distal end portion of the shaft, and maintaining the sleeve member in a fixed position relative to the shaft when the incision is being formed.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
49 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the step of directing the shaft and the shaft supported otological vent tube against the tympanic membrane includes pushing the conical tip of the shaft member and the conical flange of the vent tube through the tympanic membrane in a substantially continuous movement.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
69 words
The method of claim 1, further including retracting the conical tip portion of the shaft from the otological vent tube after the distal flange of the vent tube has been passed through the tympanic membrane while providing a predetermined restraint against an end of the vent tube opposite the distal end to ensure that the vent tube does not extrude from the incision while the shaft member is retracted.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
23 words
The method of claim 4, including using a telescoping sleeve member that is telescoped around the shaft member to provide said predetermined restraint.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
63 words
The method of claim 1, including choosing the selected length of the vent tube so that it is sufficient to ensure that the distal end can project into a middle ear passage without dislodgment of the tube from the passage and also permit the proximal end of the tube to extend a predetermined amount from the tympanic membrane into the outer ear passage.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
18 words
The method of claim 1, further including providing a proximal end of the tube with a proximal flange.
