Abstract

Abstract A valve control system controls the valve lift characteristic of at least one set of a set of inlet valves and a set of exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine installed in an automotive vehicle having driving wheels. When the engine is in a specific engine operating region, changeover of the valve lift characteristic is inhibited even when an excessive slip state of the driving wheel(s) is detected, whereas changeover of the valve lift characteristic is permitted when the engine is in other specific operating regions which are defined by the engine rotational speed and the engine load. Restoration of the changed valve lift characteristic to one selected before the change is retarded when the excessive slip state of the driving wheel(s) is eliminated. The engine output is reduced when the valve lift characteristic is restored.
