Abstract

Abstract Flush and pump flush processes yielding light sources for incandescent and metal vapor discharge lamps are disclosed. The flush and pump flush processes also yield lamps that are particularly suitable for deposition of a reflective coating on its outer surface. For such reflective coated light sources, the associated lamp leads are encased in glass and therefore are protected against any deleterious reactions that may otherwise result from the deposition of the reflective coating process. The light sources yielded by the flush and pump flush processes of the present invention are advantageous in reducing the mounting arrangement of the lamps in which the light sources are housed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 304 words
A reflector-type incandescent lamp comprising: (a) a reflector having a base, a focal point, and a pair of electrical terminals at said base, (b) a tipless incandescent light source supported within said reflector comprising: (b1) a double-ended elongated inner envelope comprising a shaped hollow central portion of vitreous material having an outer surface of general ellipsoidal form and tubular neck portions of vitreous material integral with said central portion and extending in generally opposite directions therefrom to outer ends of the neck portions, said neck portions and said central portion being disposed on a common longitudinal axis of said envelope that extends centrally of said neck portions and said central portion, (b2) a filament within said central portion having an axis extending generally parallel to said longitudinal axis and having a region located at generally said focal point of the reflector, (b3) a pair of conductive inleads respectively located within said neck portions and having inner ends connected to opposite ends of said filament for supporting said filament within said central portion in a position substantially on said common longitudinal axis, the inleads having outer ends extending to the outer ends of said neck portions, (b4) shrink seals within said neck portions for sealing said inleads with respect to their associated neck portions, each of said shrink seals being the produce of a sealing operation in which a pressure differential between atmospheres outside and inside one of each said neck portions causes vitreous material of said one neck portion when softened by applied heat to collapse about the inlead surrounded thereby, (b5) a reflective film covering said ellipsoidal outer surface of said central portion and effective to reflect infrared radiation from said filament back onto said filament, and (c) means for electrical connecting the respective outer ends of said inleads to said electrical terminals.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 75 words
The lamp of claim 1 in which: (a) said reflector comprises a parabolic shaped front section with an inside surface having a reflective coating, a spherical shaped intermediate section with an inside surface having a reflective coating, and a rear section having a reflective coating, (b) said base is located adjacent said rear section, and (c) said filament region is located at generally the focal point of said parabolic shaped front section of the reflector.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
The lamp of claim 1 in which the seal produced by said pressure differential is characterized by no tool marks on the exterior of said collapsed vitreous material.
