Abstract

Abstract Apparatus for converting a video signal to a photographic film image comprises a television standards converter for deriving from an input video signal, which may be a high definition video signal, a motion compensated digital video signal corresponding to 24 progressive scan frames per second, a video signal recorder for recording the digital video signal, a digital-to-analog converter for converting the digital video signal after reproduction to an analog video signal corresponding to 24 progressive scan frames per second, and an electron beam recorder to which the analog video signal is applied to record the content of the analog video signal on photographic film.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 125 words
A method of converting an input video signal to a photographic film image, the method comprising the steps of: deriving from said input video signal a motion compensated digital video signal having a format corresponding to 24 progressive scan frames per second; recording said motion compensated digital video signal on a recording medium with the use of a video signal recorder; reproducing said motion compensated digital video signal from said recording medium to provide a reproduced digital video signal; digital-to-analog converting said reproduced digital video signal to form an analog video signal having a format corresponding to 24 progressive scan frames per second; and supplying said analog video signal to a photographic recorder to record the content of said analog video signal on photographic film.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 30 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein said step of supplying said analog video signal to a photographic recorder comprises supplying said analog video signal to an electron beam recorder.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 36 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein said step of deriving from said input video signal a motion compensated digital video signal comprises deriving said motion compensated digital video signal from a high definition video signal.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 99 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein said input video signal includes a plurality of interlaced fields having a predetermined filed rate, and wherein the step of deriving from said input video signal a motion compensated digital video signal comprises the steps of deriving from said input video signal a motion adapted progressive scan digital video signal including a plurality of progressive scan frames having a frame rate corresponding with the field rate of said interlaced fields of said input video signal, and derived said motion compensated digital video signal from said motion adapted progressive scan digital video signal.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 118 words
A method according to claim 4, wherein the step of deriving a motion adapted progressive scan digital video signal comprises arranging the progressive scan frames thereof as a plurality of blocks and wherein the step of deriving said motion compensated digital video signal from said motion adapted progressive scan digital video signal comprises comparing blocks in a first progressive scan frame of said motion adapted digital video signal with a plurality of blocks in a following frame of said motion adapted progressive scan digital video signal for deriving motion vectors representing motion of the content of respective ones of said plurality of blocks between said first and said following frame, and with the use of said motion vectors.
