An image forming apparatus provided with a fixing unit where the toner image transferred onto a paper is heated and fixed, comprising; a detecting means for detecting the temperature of said fixing unit, a first temperature control means for controlling the temperature of said fixing unit to be kept at a first set point, a second temperature control means for controlling the temperature of said fixing unit to be kept at a second set point higher than said first set point, and a changeover means for changing the temperature control carried out by said first temperature control means to that carried out by said second temperature control means when said detecting means detects a temperature higher than said second set point.
