Abstract

Abstract A polyamide dyed with a reactive dye capable of absorbing incident light of the excitation waveband of a fluorophore or light of the emission waveband of the polyamide is provided for use in assays in which the presence or quantity of an analyte is being detected by fluorescence as a result of excitation of a fluorescent material at an excitation waveband of light and in which the excitation waveband impinges upon the polyamide.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 105 words
An optically passive microporous polyamide membrance comprising a microporous polyamide membrane substrate dyed with a metallic or non-metallic acid reactive azo dye of the formula Ar--N═N--Ar', wherein Ar and Ar' independently represent an aromatic ring system having substituents selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, carboxyl, hydroxyl, amino, amino substituted with 1 or 2 C 1 -C 4 alkyl groups, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, nitro, halo, sulfate, sulfonyl, sulfonamide, C 1 -C 4 sulfate or sulfonyl ester, and substituted or unsubstituted aromatic groups, capable of absorbing light at substantially all wave lengths from about 250 to about 400 nm.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 105 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
The membrane of claim 1, wherein said dye further absorbs light at substantially all wavelengths from about 400 to about 770 nm.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
The membrane of claim 1, wherein said dyed substrate has a reflectance of no more than 50% of incident light at any wavelength within said range of wavelengths.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 12 words
The membrane of claim 1, wherein said optically passive membrane is hydrophilic.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 12 words
The membrane of claim 1, wherein said optically passive membrane is skinless.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 10 words
The membrane of claim 1, wherein said substrate comprises nylon-6,6.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 15 words
The membrane of claim 1, wherein said dye is a non-metallic acid reactive azo dye.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 13 words
The membrane of claim 1, wherein said dye is a premetalized reactive dye.
