Abstract
Abstract In a data processing system including at least two processing units having different throughputs for performing sequential access upon a main storage unit, the number of elements of the main storage unit simultaneously accessed by the processing units is different, or the sequence of elements accessed by one of the processing units is reversed, thereby substantially improving the input/output throughput for the main storage unit.

A data processing system, comprising: a main storage unit comprising interleaved storage elements; a first processing unit, connected to said main storage unit, for performing sequential access of said main storage unit at a first rate, said first processing unit comprising first accessing means for simultaneously accessing a first definite number of the storage elements in said main storage unit; and a second processing unit, connected to said main storage unit, for performing sequential access of said main storage unit at a second rate slower than the first rate, said second processing unit comprising means for simultaneously accessing a second definite number of the storage elements in said main storage unit, the second definite number being larger than the first definite number and a ratio of said second definite number to said first definite number being at least as large as bc/(a-b), where a is the first rate of performing sequential access of said main storage unit by said first processing unit, b is the second rate of performing sequential access of said main storage unit by said second processing unit and c is a busy time of said main storage unit during each access.
