Abstract

Abstract An electroluminescent panel and method of making the same includes a plurality of layers on a transparent electrode in which each layer is formed with the same compatible polymer carrier resin base material so that the individual layers have an integrated uniformity. A polyester laminating resin is disclosed for the resin base material of each layer which is activated by a small amount of diisocyanate sufficient to provide temperature stability, but insufficient to transform the base material into a urethane. Also disclosed is an electroluminescent lamp which emits light only in discrete areas such as to produce a pattern of light in which the phosphor is applied in a pattern corresponding to the discrete areas which are to be illuminated. Similarly, the electrodes are restricted to the illuminated regions or areas, thereby conserving material as well as reducing the power requirements of the lamp. Also disclosed is an electroluminescent lamp in which the power leads are applied to the lamp at locations inwardly of the margin of the lamp, and a method of attaching the power leads inwardly of the lamp margins.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 112 words
An improved electroluminescent panel in which a plurality of layers are applied on a transparent electrode on a support base including a phosphor layer, a dielectric layer, and a second electrode layer, the improvement comprising each said layer formed of a polymer carrier resin base material which has essentially the same composition as that of each other said layer thereby providing an integrated uniformity to said layers, and in which said resin base material is a polyester laminating resin which has been activated by a diisocyanate, the amount of said diisocyanate being sufficient to provide temperature stability to said base material but being insufficient to transform said base material into a urethane.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 112 words
An improved electroluminescent panel in which a plurality of layers are applied on a transparent electrode on a support base including a phosphor layer, a dielectric layer, and a second electrode layer, the improvement comprising each said layer formed of a polymer carrier resin base material which has essentially the same composition as that of each other said layer thereby providing an integrated uniformity to said layers, and in which said resin base material is a polyester laminating resin which has been activated by a diisocyanate, the amount of said diisocyanate being sufficient to provide temperature stability to said base material but being insufficient to transform said base material into a urethane.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 23 words
The panel of claim 1 in which said diisocyanate is toluene diisocyanate, and does not exceed 5% by weight of said polyester resin.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 12 words
The panel of claim 2 in which said dielectric is barium titanate.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 14 words
The panel of claim 2 in which said second electrode layer contains flaked silver.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 28 words
The panel of claim 1 in which said support base includes a sheet of transparent polyester and has a transparent electrode coating in the form of vacuum-deposited indium-oxide.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 67 words
An improved flexible electroluminescent panel having a polyester base, a transparent electrode on said base, and a plurality of cured layers of polymer applied to said base electrode to form a completed panel, the improvement in which each of said layers has a carrier base material consisting primarily of a polyester laminating resin, and in which said laminating resin contains no more than 5% diisocyanate by weight.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 67 words
An improved flexible electroluminescent panel having a polyester base, a transparent electrode on said base, and a plurality of cured layers of polymer applied to said base electrode to form a completed panel, the improvement in which each of said layers has a carrier base material consisting primarily of a polyester laminating resin, and in which said laminating resin contains no more than 5% diisocyanate by weight.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 91 words
The panel of claim 6 in which a phosphor layer is applied to said electrode base, and a pigmented dielectric layer is applied to said phosphor layer, and a back electrode layer is applied to said pigmented layer, and in which said base transparent electrode is formed in a pattern which partially covers the surface of said base, said phosphor layer is formed in a complementary pattern in alignment with said transparent electrode, and said back electrode layer is also formed in a complementary pattern in alignment with said phosphor layer.
