Abstract

Abstract Novel sulfonated polyamide and polyurea materials are described. The polymers are water-soluble or water-dispersible, if not crosslinked. The polymers can be crosslinked with polyvalent cations or crosslinking agents. The polymers have utility as membranes, thickeners, coatings and adhesives.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 88 words
A membrane comprising having properties for pervaporization of aqueous feeds derived from a discriminating layer consisting essentially of a polymer containing at least 90 weight percent of recurring units of Formula I: ##STR11## wherein Y, at each occurrence, is independently a compatible substituent, M + , at each occurrence, is a compatible cation, R 2 at each occurrence is a covalent bond, hydrocarbylene or inertly substituted hydrocarbylene; and Z at each occurrence is independently ##STR12## and R' at each occurrence is independently hydrocarbylene or an inertly substituted hydrocarbylene.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 88 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 53 words
The membrane as described in claim 1 wherein the polymer comprises an effective number of crosslinking groups so as to render the polymer normally insoluble in water, wherein the polymer, if not crosslinked, would be water-soluble or water dispersible to the extent of at least about 1 weight percent polymer at 20° C.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 18 words
The membrane as described in claim 1 wherein Z is ##STR13## and R 2 is a covalent bond.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 13 words
The membrane as described in claim 3 wherein the recurring unit is ##STR14##
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
The membrane as described in claim 1 wherein the discriminating layer is affixed to a porous support layer.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 151 words
A method comprising separating water from an organic compound or chlorinated organic compound via pervaporation by, (a) contacting a solution of water and an organic compound or a chlorinated organic compound with a first major surface of a membrane, the membrane having a discriminating layer comprising a polymer having recurring units corresponding to Formula I: ##STR15## wherein Y, at each occurrence, is independently a compatible substituent, M + , at each occurrence, is a compatible cation, R 2 at each occurrence is a covalent bond, hydrocarbylene or inertly substituted hydrocarbylene; and Z at each occurrence is independently ##STR16## and R' at each occurrence is independently hydrocarbylene or an inertly substituted hydrocarbylene; and (b) introducing a chemical potential difference across the membrane between the first surface and second major surface, so as to induce selective permeation by pervaporation of water vapor from the first surface through the membrane to the second surface.
Claim 8
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 13 words
The method as described in claim 6 where the organic compound is ethanol.
