Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 140 words
Apparatus for modulating electromagnetic carrier waves in the optical region of the spectrum, said apparatus comprising: a waveguide including a planar substrate made of a ferroelectric, crystalline material having birefringent and electro-optic properties and having formed therein an elongated waveguide channel having a first section and at least two other sections branching off said first section and each ending as exit ports, said waveguide channel having throughout a higher index of refraction than that of said substrate along one crystallographic axis thereof so that said waveguide propagates in at least one mode a carrier wave polarized parallel to said one crystallographic axis such that the optical power emerging from said branched ports of said waveguide is substantially equal; and means for facilitating the selective changing of the amount of power emerging from said ports in correspondence with an information signal.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 140 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 142 words
Apparatus for modulating electromagnetic carrier waves in the optical region of the spectrum, said apparatus comprising: a planar substrate made of a ferroelectric crystalline material having birefringent and electro-optic properties; means for forming an elongated channel waveguide in said planar substrate for propagating a carrier wave in more than one mode with the optical power from said carrier wave modes exiting said elongated channel waveguide spatially distributed in a predetermined pattern in the near field; means for selectively changing said optical power distribution pattern in correspondence with an information signal by interfering and cross coupling energy between said carrier wave modes; and means for spatially filtering said near field optical power distribution pattern so that only the optical power in a predetermined region of said pattern travels beyond said spatial filtering means as a signal modulated in correspondence with the information signal.
Claim 4
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 29 words
The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said ferroelectric crystalline material is selected from the group consisting essentially of lithium niobate (LiNbO 3 ) and lithium tantalate (LiTaO 3 ).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 16 words
The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said ferroelectric crystalline substrate is x-cut or z-cut in form.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 50 words
The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said elongated channel waveguide formed in said planar substrate has an index of refraction higher than that of said planar substrate along one crystallographic axis thereof so that said elongated channel waveguide propagates said carrier wave modes polarized parallel to said one crystallographic axis.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 41 words
The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said means for selectively changing said optical power distribution comprise a pair of electrodes arranged on either side of said elongated channel waveguide to facilitate formation of an electric field across said elongated channel waveguide.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 29 words
The apparatus of claim 6 wherein said electrodes each comprise a layer of chromium adhered to said substrate material followed by a layer of gold overlying said chromium layer.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 21 words
The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the inboard edges of said electrodes define in one plane the width of said channel.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 38 words
The apparatus of claim 6 wherein said channel of high index material is lithium niobate or lithium tantalate in which a predetermined percentage of lithium ions have been replaced by protons from an ion-proton exchange with benzoic acid.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 32 words
The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said elongated channel waveguide splits into at least two branches, each of which terminates as a port having a predetermined power distribution in the near field.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 46 words
The apparatus of claim 10 wherein said means for facilitating the selective changing of optical power emerging from said ports comprises a pair of electrodes arranged in either side of channel first section to facilitate the formation of an electric field across said channel fist section.
Claim 14
