Abstract Bisnaphthalimides of the formula I ##STR1## where X 1 to X 4 and R have the meanings stated in the description, and their preparation are described. The compounds are cytotoxic towards human cells in vitro.

A bisnaphthalimide of the formula ##STR5## where X 1 , X 2 , X 3 and X 4 are identical or different and are each hydrogen, nitro, amino, C 1 -C 6 -alkylamino, di-C 1 -C 6 -alkylamino, hydroxyl, C 1 -C 6 -alkoxy, halogen, trihalomethyl, C 1 -C 6 -alkyl, formyl, C 1 -C 6 -alkylcarbonyl, ureyl, C 1 -C 6 -alkylureyl or C 1 -C 6 alkylcarbonylamino and R is a straight chain or branched C 4 -C 10 -alkylene which is interrupted at one or two points in the chain by a secondary or tertiary amino group, where 2 nitrogen atoms may additionally be bonded to one another by an alkylene group, or a salt with a physiologically tolerated acid.
