Abstract

Abstract An improved liquid crystal device is described such as a display. The device comprises a pair of substrates, a liquid crystal layer, an electrode arrangement, and a ferroelectric film. The ferroelectric film is formed on the inside of the substrate by spining method using a mixture of a ferroelectric material and an organic resin. When coating, the mixture is diluted with a solvent so that the ferroelectric film can be formed as a thin film. In advance of curring, the ferroelectric film is subjected to an electric field and its dipole moment is aligned and fixed in a direction perpendicular to the substrate. In virtue of the dipole moment, the liquid crystal device can be controlled by applying a voltage in one direction with a high stability.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 138 words
A liquid crystal device comprising: a pair of substrates; a liquid crystal layer disposed between said substrates; a ferroelectric film provided inside of said pair of substrates adjacent to said liquid crystal layer, said ferroelectric film exhibiting a spontaneous polarization; an electrode arrangement disposed at the inside surfaces of the substrates for inducing electric fields across both said ferroelectric film and said liquid crystal layer such that said spontaneous polarization corresponds to a first direction of an electric field in the ferroelectric film; and driving means for applying electric power to said electrode arrangement to apply an electric field weaker than the threshold level of said ferroelectric film in the direction opposite to said first electrode arrangement to thus change said polarization of said film so that the response time of the liquid crystal device may be increased.
