Abstract

Abstract A cryostat is provided comprising a closed cylindrical vacuum vessel and a helium vessel situated inside the vacuum vessel. The helium vessel has four mounting supports on either circular face of the helium vessel, with two supports on the upper portion and two supports on the lower portion. Eight composite straps are provided with one end of each of four of the straps rotatably mounted to each of the mounting supports on each end face of the helium vessel. The other end of the straps are mounted through a clevis arrangement to the helium vessel. The straps on each face are parallel to the circular end faces of the vacuum vessel and the helium vessel. The straps symmetrically located about the vertical and horizontal axes of the helium vessel. The radial suspension provided does not move the axial centerline of the helium vessel relative to the axial centerline of the vacuum vessel when the temperature of the cryostat varies.

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 206 words
A cryostat comprising: a closed cylinder vacuum vessel having eight mounting supports; a cylindrical coil carrying structure situated concentrically in said vacuum vessel, each end of said coil carrying structure being divided by first and second imaginary diametral lines which extend through the vacuum vessel, said lines situated perpendicular to one another and both lines situated perpendicular to the axial centerline of the vacuum vessel, said diametral lines dividing each of the ends of the coil carrying structure into four quadrants, said coil carrying structure having four mounting supports on each end, said mounting supports on said closed cylindrical vacuum vessel situated in paris equally circumferentially spaced on either side of said first diametral line where it extends through the vacuum vessel walls; and eight straps, four straps situated at each end of said cylindrical coil carrying structure, each strap having one end secured to a respective one of said mounting supports on said vacuum vessel and the other end of each of the straps secured to said mounting supports on said coil carrying structure, each strap lying entirely within a respective quadrant and within a plane defined by the first and second diametral lines, said straps arranged symmetrically about said first and second diametral lines.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 206 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 14 words
The cryostat of claim 1 wherein said straps comprise unidirectional dominated fiber reinforced plastic.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 14 words
The cryostat of claim 2 wherein said vacuum vessel is fabricated of ferromagnetic material.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
The cryostat of claim 3 wherein said cylindrical coil carrying structure comprises a cylindrical helium vessel.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 32 words
The cryostat of claim 4 further comprising two radiant cylindrical heat shields nested inside said vacuum vessel and surrounding said helium vessel, said two radiant shields radially supported from said helical vessel.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 48 words
The cryostat of claim 5 further comprising heat stationing connectors secured to each of said straps to connect predetermined sections along the length of the straps to each of the radiation shields, so that heat flow from the vacuum vessel can be intercepted before reaching the helium vessel.
