Abstract

Abstract A transaction system enables a portable token to co-operate with a fixed terminal. The token is inductively coupled to the terminal, and receives data from the terminal via a frequency modulated carrier signal. Data is sent from the token to the terminal by amplitude modulation of the carrier signal from the terminal, i.e. by modulating the power driven by the token from the terminal. The power needed to energize the on-board processing capability of the token is also obtained from the terminal via the inductive coupling. The token includes an arrangement for commencing processor operation in an orderly manner when it is brought into the proximity of the terminal, and for providing an orderly shut down when the token is withdrawn.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 63 words
A transmission system including a terminal; a token having an on-board data processing capability; means for inductively coupling the token with the terminal to permit data communication therebetween and means associated with the terminal for transmitting a carrier signal and for detecting a variation in the power demand on the carrier signal which is indicative of the presence of an inductively coupled token.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 63 words
A transmission system including a terminal; a token having an on-board data processing capability; means for inductively coupling the token with the terminal to permit data communication therebetween and means associated with the terminal for transmitting a carrier signal and for detecting a variation in the power demand on the carrier signal which is indicative of the presence of an inductively coupled token.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 39 words
A system as claimed in claim 1 and wherein means are provided for transmitting the carrier signal at a relatively low stand-by level which is raised to a higher operating level when a token inductively couples with the terminal.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 58 words
A system as claimed in claim 1 and wherein the token includes voltage detection means operative to initiate operation of the on-board processing capability when the detected voltage rises above a threshold level, and means operative to shut down, in an orderly manner, operation of the on-board processing capability when the detected voltage falls below a threshold level.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 37 words
A system as claimed in claim 3, and wherein the voltage detection means is operative to monitor the voltage induced in an inductive coil mounted on the token and which is operative to receive said carrier signals.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 117 words
A terminal for use with a token having an inductor and circuitry connected to the inductor, comprising: another inductor, with which the inductor of a token can be inductively coupled; first means, connected to the another inductor, for communicating with the circuitry of a token via the inductor of the token; second means for generating a power demand signal across the another inductor; and third means for detecting whether the another inductor is inductively coupled to the inductor of a token, the third means including means connected to the another inductor for monitoring the power demand signal generated across the another inductor by the second means to detect a variation in the power demand on the signal.
Claim 7
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 94 words
The terminal of claim 5, wherein the terminal further comprises a capacitor connected to the another inductor to form a tuned circuit, wherein the first means comprises an amplifier having an enable input terminal, wherein the second means comprises a low power oscillator, and wherein the third means comprises a voltage monitor connected to the another inductor and to the enable terminal of the amplifier, the voltage monitor enabling the amplifier when the inductor of a token is inductively coupled with the another inductor, causing the signal level across the another inductor to fall.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 25 words
The terminal of claim 5, wherein the first means comprises means for transmitting data to the token and means for receiving data from the token.
