Abstract
Abstract A hologram is fabricated by opening a volume phase reflection hologram formed in a recording medium such as a positive photoresist. The opening occurs by forming a second hologram, such as an off-axis hologram, in the same recording medium. The opened hologram can be replicated in metal and the metal can be used to emboss the fringe pattern of the opened hologram into plastic. A full range of colors in the visible spectrum may be obtained by metallizing the embossed plastic structure and then by overcoating it with appropriate clear dielectric layers.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim
121 words
A method of replicating a hologram comprising the steps of: (A) forming a volume phase reflection hologram in a medium by: (1) projecting two beams of light into the medium from opposite sides thereof, one of the beams having first impinged upon an object to form a reflection hologram of the object, and (2) opening a portion of the interference fringes of said reflection hologram by projecting two further beams onto a surface on the same side of the medium, which beams are disposed at an angle with respect to each other; (B) developing the medium; (C) coating the surface of volume phase reflection hologram with a metal to form a master; and (D) embossing the master in a new medium.
Claim 2
Independent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
25 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the medium is photoresist and the step of opening comprises exposing the medium to at least three coherent beams.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
31 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the medium is photoresist and the step of opening comprises exposing the medium to a coherent beam which is projected through a coarse Ronchi grating.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
44 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the medium is photoresist and the step of opening comprises exposing the medium to a first unmodulated beam and to a second beam which is first passed through or is reflected from a body which scatters light randomly.
