Abstract
Abstract The invention relates primarily to quaternized compounds having the formula ##STR1## wherein m is an integer having a value of from 1 to 4; R is alkylene having from 3 to 8 carbon atoms and is optionally substituted with C 1 to C 4 alkyl; R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are each independently selected from the group of alkyl, alkyl oxide, alkylhydroxy, alkoxy, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl, and alkyl amidoalkyl radicals, said groups each having from 1 to 30 carbon atoms and at least one of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 is a radical having from 8 to 30 carbon atoms; and X - is a chloride, bromide or iodide anion. The invention also relates to the preparation and use of said quaternized compounds.

The cosmetic formulation comprising between about 0.05% and about 8% by weight, based on the total formulation, of a quaternized amino heterocyclic amide having the formula ##STR8## wherein X - is a chloride, bromide or iodide anion; m is an integer having a value of from 1 to 4; R is C 3 to C 9 alkylene in which the alkylene moiety may be substituted with C 1 -C 4 and R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are each independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxy, alkyl oxide, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl and alkyl amidoalkyl radicals, said groups having from 1 to 30carbon atoms and at least one of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 having at least 8 carbon atoms in a linear chain except when R 2 and R 3 together with the quaternary nitrogen atom form a 3 to 9 membered heterocyclic ring, said ring containing from 1 to 2 hetero atoms selected from the group of nitrogen and oxygen, then R 1 contains 1 to 30 carbon atoms.
