Abstract

Abstract A digital recording medium formed of a thermoplastic substrate having a regular array of microscopic optically-alterable mirrors each supported by a mesa projecting from one surface of the substrate. The parallel rows of the mirrors are the same distance apart as the mirrors in each row. The medium can be formed from a single transparent thermoplastic substrate with an array of indentations in a first surface. The bottom of each indentation is coated with a reflective material. When viewed from the opposite surface of the substrate, the indentations become mesas. The reflective coating is sputtered onto the first surface thereby coating the first surface and the bottoms of the mesas. The reflective coating is then removed by abrasion from the first surface. Recording is by exposure through a second surface of the substrate to a laser beam that reduces the reflectivity of selected mirrors. After exposure to the recording laser beam, the mirrors retain enough reflectivity to be distinguishable from the intervening valleys. The mirrors serve as timing and tracking markers prior to and during recording, and during read-out. The area and location of each information bit is determined prior to recording: not as a result of the recording process.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 87 words
The method of making a medium for the storage of digital data comprising the steps of providing a substrate of transparent thermoplastic material having first and second opposing surfaces, forming in said first surface an array of rows of equally spaced depressions, depositing a reflecting coating on said first surface and on the bottom of each of said depressions, said coating being capable of a significant reduction in reflectivity when exposed to focused energy, and removing reflective coating from areas between said depressions of said first surface.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 87 words
The method of making a medium for the storage of digital data comprising the steps of providing a substrate of transparent thermoplastic material having first and second opposing surfaces, forming in said first surface an array of rows of equally spaced depressions, depositing a reflecting coating on said first surface and on the bottom of each of said depressions, said coating being capable of a significant reduction in reflectivity when exposed to focused energy, and removing reflective coating from areas between said depressions of said first surface.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method as claimed in claim 1 including the step of subjecting said areas of said first surface between said depressions to abrasion to remove reflective coating therefrom.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 25 words
The method as claimed in claim 1 including the step of applying a non-reflecting layer to said areas of said first surface between said depressions.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method claimed in claim 1 wherein said depressions are arranged in parallel rows.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 25 words
The method as claimed in claim 4 wherein said rows are equally spaced by a distance equal to the distance between depressions in said rows.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 98 words
The method of making a digital recording medium comprising the steps of providing a substrate of transparent thermoplastic material having first and second opposing surfaces, forming in said first surface a regular array of depressions and in which the depressions are equally spaced in parallel rows and the distance between adjacent rows is equal to the spacing between adjacent depressions in said rows, depositing a reflective coating on said first surface and on the bottoms of said depressions, removing the reflective coating from said first surface thereby to form equally spaced micromirrors on the bottoms of said depressions.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 98 words
The method of making a digital recording medium comprising the steps of providing a substrate of transparent thermoplastic material having first and second opposing surfaces, forming in said first surface a regular array of depressions and in which the depressions are equally spaced in parallel rows and the distance between adjacent rows is equal to the spacing between adjacent depressions in said rows, depositing a reflective coating on said first surface and on the bottoms of said depressions, removing the reflective coating from said first surface thereby to form equally spaced micromirrors on the bottoms of said depressions.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 12 words
The method as claimed in claim 6 wherein said micromirrors are flat.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 18 words
The method as claimed in claim 7 wherein said coating is a composite of gold and a silicate.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 22 words
The method as claimed in claim 7 wherein each of said micromirrors has an area between about 0.7 and four square micrometers.
