Abstract
Abstract An input/output connector system (20) having spring contacts (68) in the header assembly (22) that engage pins (34) also in the header assembly (22) upon demating the receptacle assembly (24). The spring contacts (68) may remain in contact with the pins (34) while the receptacle assembly (24) is in mating engagement with the header assembly (22) or alternatively provide a make-before-break or break-before-make engagement with the pins (34) upon mating of the receptacle and header assemblies (24, 22).

Claim 1
Independent Claim
241 words
A connector system comprising: a header assembly having a mounting face and an insulative housing defining a cavity; a plurality of pin contacts having a first end extending from the mounting face and a second end extending into the cavity; a receptacle assembly having a mating face and an insulative housing; a plurality of terminals mounted in the receptacle assembly, said terminals mounted in the receptacle assembly, said terminals having a mating portion directed toward the mating face for mating with said pin contacts, and a terminating portion directed away from the mating face for terminating conductors of a cable; and a plurality of spring contacts in said header assembly, said spring contacts having a first end and a second end, said first end extending from the mounting face and capable of being connected to independent circuits, each of said second ends in biased engagement with said second end of only one corresponding pin contact when the header assembly and a receptacle assembly are not mated, said second end of said spring contacts deflected out of engagement with said second end of a corresponding pin contact by said receptacle housing when the header assembly and receptacle assembly are mated, whereby upon mating of said header and receptacle assemblies, said receptacle assembly housing causes said second end of said spring contacts to break electrical engagement with said second end of corresponding pin contacts, which disconnects the independent circuits from the pin contacts.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
27 words
A connector system as recited in claim 1 further comprising a recess in the header assembly housng proximate the spring contacts into which the spring contacts deflect.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
23 words
A connector system as recited in claim 1 further comprising latching means for securing the header assembly to the receptacle assembly upon mating.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
202 words
A connector system, comprising: a header assembly having a mounting face and an insulative housing defining a cavity; a plurality of pin contacts having a first end extending from the mounting face and a second end extending into the cavity; a receptacle assembly having a mating face and an insulative housing, said receptacle assembly having an extension on the receptacle assembly housing extending forwardly of the mating face; a plurality of terminals mounted in the receptacle assembly, said terminals having a mating portion directed toward the mating face for mating with said pin contacts, and a terminating portion directed away from the mating face for terminating conductors of a cable; a plurality of spring contacts in said header assembly, said spring contacts having a first end and a second end, said first end extending from the mounting face and capable of being connected to independent circuits, said second end in biased engagement with said second end of a corresponding pin contact when the header asembly and receptacle assembly are not mated, said extension adapted to wipingly engage the spring contacts and deflect the spring contacts to break the engagement thereof with corresponding pin contacts upon mating of the header and receptacle assemblies.
Claim 6
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
43 words
A connector system as recited in claim 4 wherein the length of the extension provides a making of a circuit between a pin contact and a corresponding terminal before the breaking of a circuit between said pin contact and a corresponding spring contact.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
43 words
A connector system as recited in claim 4 wherein the length of the extension provides a breaking of a circuit between a pin contact and a corresponding spring contact before the making of a circuit between said pin contact and a corresponding terminal.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
45 words
A connector system as recited in claim 4 wherein the extension on the receptacle assembly housing is thinner than the receptacle assembly housing, whereby the extension provides an insulative separator between the pin contacts and the spring contacts with minimal deflection of the spring contacts.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
27 words
A connector system as recited in claim 4 further comprising a recess in the header assembly housing proximate the spring contacts into which the spring contacts deflect.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
42 words
