Abstract

Abstract Process for the preparation of polymers of vinylphosphonic acid in protic diluents with the aid of catalysts which form free radicals, which comprises heating vinylphosphonic acid at temperatures of 40° to 130° C. in a total of 10 to 150% by weight of protic diluents for a total of 4-60 hours in the presence of 1.0 to 5.5% by weight of aliphatic peroxy-esters, diacyl peroxides and/or aliphatic azo compounds which decompose by half in one hour at temperatures below 122° C.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 88 words
A process for the preparation of a polymer of vinylphosphonic acid in a protic diluent with the aid of a catalyst which forms free radicals, which comprises heating vinylphosphonic acid at temperatures of 40° to 130° C. in a total of 10 to 150% by weight of a protic diluent for a total of 4-60 hours in the presence of 1.0 to 5.5% by weight of an aliphatic peroxy-ester, an aliphatic diacyl peroxide or mixtures thereof which decompose by half in one hour at temperatures below 122° C.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 88 words
A process for the preparation of a polymer of vinylphosphonic acid in a protic diluent with the aid of a catalyst which forms free radicals, which comprises heating vinylphosphonic acid at temperatures of 40° to 130° C. in a total of 10 to 150% by weight of a protic diluent for a total of 4-60 hours in the presence of 1.0 to 5.5% by weight of an aliphatic peroxy-ester, an aliphatic diacyl peroxide or mixtures thereof which decompose by half in one hour at temperatures below 122° C.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 48 words
The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein only 0.1 to 1% by weight of the total amount of catalyst is added at the start of the reaction and a further 0.9 to 5.4% by weight of the catalyst is added uniformly in the course of the reaction.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 36 words
The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the reaction is carried out in the presence of an aliphatic peroxy-ester or diacyl peroxide which dissociates by half between 80° C. and 121° C. within one hour.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 42 words
The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein vinylphosphonic acid which contains up to 30% by weight of phosphonic acid which contains up to 30% by weight of phosphonic acids and phosphoric acid or the monomethyl esters of these acids is polymerized.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 23 words
The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the polymer of vinylphosphonic acid is essentially a polyvinylphosphonic acid or a methyl ester thereof.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 38 words
The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the monomer consists essentially of pure vinylphosphonic acid or vinylphosphonic acid containing up to 30% by weight of phosphonic acids and phosphoric acid or the monomethyl esters of these acids.
