Abstract Carbonitriles of the formula I ##STR1## wherein R 1 and R 2 are each an alkyl group having 1-12 C atoms and wherein one or two CH 2 groups/can be groups which are not adjacent replaced by --O--, --O--CO--, --CO--O-- and/or --CH═CH--, and A 1 is a H or ##STR2## is a group of the formula 1 ##STR3## wherein R 3 has one of the meanings of R 1 , can be used as components of liquid crystal phases.
