A viscous, creamy liquid scouring cleanser which is substantially free of terpene solvents containing a surface-active agent, an abrasive, and a binary solvent system represented by: from 0.1% to 5% by weight of a water-insoluble hydrocarbon solvent, selected from C 10 -C 22 alkyl benzenes and C 8 -C 20 paraffins; and from 0.1% to 5% by weight of a fatty alcohol having from 8 to 20 carbon atoms; the weight ratio of water-insoluble hydrocarbon solvent to fatty alcohol being in the range from 3:1 to 1:4.
