Abstract

Abstract A process of making a deicing or dust control agent with reduced corrosivity comprises mixing spent sulfite liquor and chloride salt of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal proportionally so that the ratio of lignosulfonate solids of the spent sulfite liquor to metal chloride salt is from about 1:25 to about 15:1 and the pH of the mixture is from about 4.5 to about 8.5. The sulfite liquor: chloride salt product can be spread onto road surfaces in dried form, sprayed on as single or multiple solutions, and/or mixed with a non-slipping agent or the like.
