Abstract

Abstract Heavy metal fluoride glasses are made by a process that requires high purity fluoride constituent compounds, some of which are further refined by sublimation. Handling occurs in a protective atmosphere such as argon. The charge is placed in a sealed modified optical growth furnace having the ability of atmosphere control, heat control and position control of the charge. The charge is firstly raised to its fusion temperature, then to an admixture temperature, and finally to a higher temperature. The charge is immediately removed from the heating source and quickly cooled through the critical crystallization region. The total heating and cooling time being about one to two hours. The resulting glass ingot is partially annealed. The HMFG of (Zr or Hf)F4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF2 consistently exhibits low levels of both light scattering and bulk OH contact, along with very reproducible hardness, thermal parameters, and UV and IR edge absorption behavior.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 242 words
A process of manufacturing a bulk heavy metal fluoride glass, said process comprising the steps of: obtaining constituent fluoride compounds of said heavy metal fluoride glass in as pure a form as possible; selectively refining said compounds by sublimation to obtain higher purity compounds; minimizing contamination of said compounds by the ambient atmosphere; weighing each of said compounds to obtain a desired composition of said heavy metal fluoride glass; mixing said compounds together to form said desired composition; forming a charge of said composition; loading a crucible with said charge; placing said crucible in a crystal growth furnace; sealing said furnace; evacuating said furnace; backfilling said furnace with an inert gas; creating a reactive atmosphere in said furnace to remove undesirable chemical groups from said charge; heating said charge to a charge fusion temperature to cause said charge to melt; allowing said charge to react with said reactive atmosphere; raising a temperature of said charge above said fusion temperature to insure admixture of molten constituent compounds of said charge; raising said charge to a higher temperature above an admixture temperature for a period of time, said charge reaching said higher temperature in about 1 to 2 hours from the start of said heating; lowering a temperature of said charge in a short period of time to a temperature less than said fusion temperature, said charge forming a bulk glass, in situ; removing said crucible from said furnace; and removing said bulk glass.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 242 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 40 words
A process as defined in claim 1 wherein said step of lowering a temperature occurs as a result of turning off heating power, rapidly cooling to a vitreous condition said charge, and removing said crucible from sources of heat therein.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 26 words
A process as defined in claim 1 wherein said lowering of temperature of said charge occurs at a maximum rate of about 90° C. per minute.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 41 words
A process as defined in claim 3 wherein said lowering a temperature of said charge occurs at a rate of about 50° to 90° C. per minute through a critical crystallization region, said critical region being about 500° to 600° C.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
A process as defined in claim 1 wherein said forming of a bulk glass occurs within one hour.
