Abstract

Abstract The viability of a pack of stored blood platelets is monitored by gripping the pack between two plates (6) and (7) which are closed to pinch together the walls of the bag (10) along an L-shaped seal (14), leaving a channel (17), squeezing a part (15) of the bag by means of a reciprocating plunger (19), so that the platelets continually flow to and fro between the part (15) and the part (16), through the channel (17), and passing a beam of light from an LED (27) through the channel (17), to a photoresistor (29). The AC signal from the photoresistor corresponds to the fluctuations in the intensity of the light passing through the channel (17) and the amplitude of this signal is representative of the viability, and hence the clinical acceptability, of the platelets.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 107 words
The method of monitoring non-invasively the viability of a pack of stored blood platelets without removing a sample therefrom, said method comprising periodically agitating said pack, irradiating said pack with a beam of light and detecting solely the amplitude of the fluctuations in the intensity of light transmitted through said pack in a particular direction between maximum and minimum levels at the periodic frequency of agitation of the pack, and comparing this with a datum related to the amplitude of the fluctuations between maximum and minimum levels in the intensity of light transmitted in the same direction through a similar pack of fresh platelets under similar conditions.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 33 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein said pack is agitated to cause said platelets to flow to and fro across a zone through which said pack is irradiated with said light beam.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 56 words
A method according to claim 2, wherein said pack comprises a bag with two major opposed walls which are pinched together to divide the interior of said bag into two parts connected by a channel consituting said zone; and one of said parts is periodically squeezed to cause said to and fro flow through said channel.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 37 words
A method according to claim 3, wherein said bag is supported with said walls generally vertical, said bag parts are in opposite sides of said bag and said channel is adjacent to the bottom of said bag.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein a continuous display is produced representing the relationship between said detected amplitude and said datum.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 23 words
A method according to claim 5, wherein said display comprises at least one light, the illumination of which is representative of said relationship.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 55 words
A method according to claim 4, wherein said periodic squeezing of said one bag part causes said flow in one direction through said channel, intervening reverse flow when said squeezing is released being provided solely by differential hydrostatic pressure across said channel resulting from the displacement of said platelets through said channel by said squeezing.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 18 words
A method according to claim 4, wherein said periodic squeezing occurs at a frequency of about 2 Hz.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 55 words
A method according to claim 4, wherein said bag is supported between two plates and said periodic squeezing is provided by a presser which reciprocates to and fro through a window in one of said plates and squeezes said one bag part against the other of said plates, said presser working through a predetermined stroke.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 47 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein said beam of light is collected by a photoelectric detector after transmission through said pack, and said amplitude of the fluctuation in the intensity of light is detected by detecting an AC component in a signal from said photoelectric detector.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 43 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein said steps of agitating, irradiating, detecting and comparing are carried out with said pack in situ in a storage condition, said periodic agitation being carried out continually as necessary to prolong the life of said platelets.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 164 words
A method of monitoring non-invasively the viability of a pack of stored blood platelets without removing a sample therefrom, said method comprising: periodically agitating said pack to cause platelets in at least a selected portion of the pack alternately to flow to and fro with alternating increased velocity and lower velocity, irradiating the selected portion of the pack with light and causing a portion of the light to be transmitted through the pack in a particular direction, the intensity of the light transmitted through the pack fluctuating between maximum and minimum levels periodically at a frequency related to the frequency of the periodic agitation of the pack, and detecting solely the amplitude difference between the maximum and minimum levels of the transmitted light fluctuating at the periodic frequency and comparing this amplitude difference with a datum related to the amplitude difference of the maximum and minimum levels of light transmitted in the same direction through a similar pack of fresh platelets under similar conditions.
