Abstract

Abstract A membrane fuel cell battery is described which is characterized by improved reactant flow distribution and heat removal. Internally cooled, bipolar, reactant flow defining assemblies separate the ion exchange membranes of adjacent cells. Coolant flow through the interior of the separator is controlled to cool one side more than the other. The cooler side of one separator contacts the fuel side of a membrane while the warmer side of the adjacent separator contacts the oxidant side. The temperature differential across the membrane minimizes drying of the fuel side of the hydrated cell membranes.
