Abstract

Abstract An improved portable fluorescent light unit is disclosed in which the improvement comprises a pair of electrically insulated lamp supports which facilitate assembly of the unit. Each lamp support may comprise an inner socket element and an outer supporting element. The inner socket elements fit against the ends of the lamp, and each socket element has a pair of apertures in which electrical connectors are mounted. The outer supporting element is attached to the housing of the unit and has a central opening into which the inner socket element is inserted. The lamp supports may also include means for accommodating thermal expansion of the housing by having the inner socket element being slidably mounted with the opening and movable in a direction parallel to the axis of the fluorescent lamp. The electrical connectors may have cylindrical portions adapted to fit circumferentially around the pins extending from the fluorescent lamp and to extend axially a substantial distance along the length of the pin to avoid the problems of point contact mounting arrangements.
