Abstract

Abstract A pulverulent, water soluble material is agglomerated by projecting the material in a stream through a moistening zone, directing steam or mist towards the stream in the moistening zone so that the stream is surrounded by steam or mist flowing inwardly towards the stream, thereby moistening and fusing the particles, and then drying the material. Particles of the material may be engaged with one another to form chunks before moistening.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 19
Claim 1
Independent Claim 120 words
A process agglomerating a water-soluble particulate material comprising: (a) projecting a stream of particles of the particulate material through a confined moistening chamber in a downward direction along a generally vertical path, the stream of particles having a lesser cross-section width than the cross-section width of the moistening chamber; (b) diffusing an aqueous gas horizontally inwardly, from outside and about the periphery of the confines of the moistening chamber, towards the stream of particles such that the aqueous gas is directed to and surrounds and tends to confine the stream of particles under relatively quiescent conditions throughout their path through the moistening chamber to moisten and fuse the particles; and then (c) drying the resulting moistened and fused particulate material.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 120 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 49 words
A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the stream of particles projected has a generally circular cross-section and the aqueous gas is diffused toward the axis of the stream such that the rate of aqueous gas flow is substantially constant about the circumference of the stream of particles.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 13 words
A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the aqueous gas is steam.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 51 words
A process as claimed in claim 1, further comprising feeding a cooling gas downward at a subsonic velocity adjacent to and about the periphery of the stream of particles such that the stream of particles and cooling gas have a lesser cross-section width than the cross-section width of the moistening chamber.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 61 words
A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the particulate material is soluble coffee and wherein the aqueous gas is diffused into the moistening chamber at a flow rate from about 0.9 to about 2.4 kg per minute per liter of moistening chamber volume and about 0.25 to about 0.50 kg per kg of particulate material projected through the moistening zone.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 28 words
A process as claimed in claim 1 or claim 5, wherein the mean particle size of the particulate material to be projected is less than about 40 microns.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 53 words
A process as claimed in claim 1, further comprising projecting a stream of steam downward at a subsonic velocity adjacent to and about the periphery of the stream of particles such that the stream of particles and stream of steam have a lesser cross-section width than the cross-section width of the moistening chamber.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 31 words
A process as claimed in claim 7, further comprising feeding a cooling gas downward at a subsonic velocity adjacent to and between the stream of particles and the stream of steam.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 12 words
A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the particles are granules.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 44 words
A process as claimed in claim 7, wherein the stream of particles is projected through a feed orifice at the upper end of the moistening chamber and wherein the stream of steam is projected through an orifice about and adjacent the particle feed orifice.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 46 words
A process as claimed in claim 10, further comprising feeding a cooling gas downward at a subsonic velocity adjacent to and between the stream of particles and the stream of steam through an orifice adjacent to and between the particle feed orifice and the steam orifice.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 33 words
A process as claimed in claim 9, wherein the granules are selected from the group consisting of granules of soluble coffee, soluble tea, soluble chicory powder and cocoa-based beverage mixes and combinations thereof.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 39 words
A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the water-soluble particulate material is selected from the group consisting of soluble coffee, soluble tea, soluble chicory powder, soluble barley powder, skim milk powder and cocoa-based beverage mixes and combinations thereof.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 37 words
A process as claimed in claim 1 or 8, wherein the mean particle size of the particles to be projected is up 200 microns, further comprising the step of fragmenting at least some of the dried material.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 36 words
A process as claimed in claim 1 or 8, further comprising engaging at least some of the particles to be projected with one another to form chunks and then projecting the chunks in the particle stream.
