Abstract

Abstract Composite materials useful as hard tissue prosthetics comprising synthetic biodegradable polymers and unsintered calcium phosphate biomaterials optionally porositized by pore-forming agents are described. The composite materials may be ground and blended with a compatible water soluble pore-forming agent and then molded to form dense, shaped objects which may be made porous by leaching out said water soluble pore-forming agent. The composites may be used as hard tissue prosthetics either alone or in conjunction with conventional prostheses.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 87 words
A composite material comprising from about 25 to about 75 percent by weight of an unsintered calcium phosphate biomaterial and about 75 to about 25 percent by weight of synthetic biodegradable polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyester of glycolic acid, a polyester of lactic acid, polyhydroxy-butyrate, an α-amino acid polymer and mixtures thereof, said composite material also containing from about 5 to about 30 percent by weight of a pore-forming agent (based on the total weight of the composite material plus the pore-forming agent).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 87 words
A composite material comprising from about 25 to about 75 percent by weight of an unsintered calcium phosphate biomaterial and about 75 to about 25 percent by weight of synthetic biodegradable polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyester of glycolic acid, a polyester of lactic acid, polyhydroxy-butyrate, an α-amino acid polymer and mixtures thereof, said composite material also containing from about 5 to about 30 percent by weight of a pore-forming agent (based on the total weight of the composite material plus the pore-forming agent).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 33 words
The composite material of claim 1 also containing from about 10 to about 20 percent by weight of a pore-forming agent (based on the total weight of the composite material plus pore-forming agent).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 34 words
The composite material of claim 1 wherein the synthetic biodegradable polymer is a copolymer prepared from at least two monomers selected from the group consisting of lactic acid, glycolic acid, hydroxybutyrate and amino acids.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
The composite material of claim 1 wherein the synthetic biodegradable polymer is an α-amino acid polymer.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 29 words
The composite material of claim 4 wherein the α-amino acid polymer is a glutamic acid-γ-ester polymer and the unsintered calcium phosphate biomaterial is unsintered hydroxyapatite or unsintered tricalcium phosphate.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 27 words
The composite material of claim 5 wherein the glutamic acid-γ-ester is glutamic acid-γ-methyl ester and the unsintered calcium phosphate biomaterial is unsintered hydroxyapatite or unsintered tricalcium phosphate.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 27 words
The composite material of claim 5 wherein the glutamic acid-γ-ester is glutamic acid-γ-benzyl ester and the unsintered calcium phosphate biomaterial is unsintered hydroxyapatite or unsintered tricalcium phosphate.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 22 words
The composite material of claim 6 containing from about 40 to about 60 percent by weight of said unsintered calcium phosphate biomaterial.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 22 words
The composite material of claim 7 containing from about 40 to about 60 percent by weight of said unsintered calcium phosphate biomaterial.
