Abstract

Abstract An ink supply system for writing instruments which operate with liquid ink. The writing instrument has a large-volume ink reservoir which communicates via a recharge valve with a small-volume ink reservoir which is adjacent to the writing element. The transmission of ink from the large-volume ink reservoir to the secondary reservoir is controlled by a sensor as a function of the quantity of ink which is present in the secondary ink reservoir. In order to simplify the recharging of the ink, and to be able to operate with the least possible electrical energy, the present invention utilizes as a recharge valve a tube pump which is rotatably driven by an electric motor and also generate the pressure necessary to convey the ink to the secondary ink reservoir.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 156 words
An ink supply system for a writing instrument which operates with liquid ink; said system comprising: a housing for said writing instrument, said housing including a primary large-volume reservoir for ink at a pressure in excess of atmospheric pressure, and also including a secondary, small-volume capillary active reservoir operatively connected therewith; a writing element connected to said housing; said secondary reservoir having means for communication with outside air and also with said writing element; and a tube pump which is installed within said housing for said writing instrument and which acts as an electrically actuatable recharge valve, is controllable as a function of sensed filling need, and means to connect said primary large-volume reservoir via line connection to said secondary small-volume reservoir for supplying it every time if the ink supply in said secondary small-volume reservoir is running short and refills the small-volume reservoir with ink, supplied from the large-volume reservoir until it is sufficiently filled.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 156 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 39 words
An ink supply system according to claim 1, which includes, as a drive mechanism for said tube pump, an electric motor in said housing and a battery in said housing operatively connected for energy supply to said electric motor.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 39 words
An ink supply system according to claim 1, which includes, as a drive mechanism for said tube pump, a spring mechanism motor which comprises, within said housing, an electric motor and a battery operatively connected to supply energy therefor.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 40 words
An ink supply system according to claim 2, which includes a capacitive sensor operatively associated with said secondary reservoir for monitoring the content thereof, and for controlling said drive mechanism connected for effecting ink supply operation of said tube pump.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 64 words
An ink supply system according to claim 4, in which said large-volume reservoir is in the form of a replaceable ink cartridge; and in which said housing includes a seat for said cartridge, and associated with said seat, a spring contact arrangement for disconnecting said battery from said drive mechanism to preclude ink supply operation when no ink cartridge is provided on said seat.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 45 words
An ink supply system according to claim 5, in which said ink cartridge is arranged essentially at atmospheric pressure, and in which the pressure necessary to convey ink from said cartridge to said secondary reservoir is produced by operation of said tube pump associated therewith.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 76 words
An ink supply system according to claim 6, in which said electric motor has a shaft operative therewith; which includes an annular member which operatively encircles said motor shaft within said housing; and in which said tube pump includes a tube and a radial ball bearing which is eccentrically connected operatively with said motor shaft and has an outer bearing ring which operatively contacts a portion of said tube which is supported against said annular member.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 31 words
An ink supply system according to claim 6, in which said tube pump is a peristaltically-operating tube pump having a tube which essentially extends in the axial direction of said housing.
