Phenoxazine and phenothiazine dyes and leuco forms thereof

Claim 2

A phenoxazine or phenothiazine dye represented by the formula: ##STR18## wherein X is --S-- or --O--; each R is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, and Z, where Z is as defined below, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and (3) Z, wherein Z is ##STR19## wherein Q is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, and Z, where Z is as defined above, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and R' is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen or halogen, and (2) alkyl or alkoxy of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or these groups substituted by up to 3 halogen atoms; and A is an anion; with the proviso that when X=--O--, R cannot be halomethyl or cyanomethyl, and with the proviso that R can have up to a total of 5 carbonyl and sulfonyl groups, and with the proviso that the average value of a Taft Constant and of a Hammett Constant for the two R groups on at least one 3- or 7-position nitrogen atom is greater than 1.5 for a Taft constant and greater than +0.15 for a Hammett Constant; and with the proviso that said dye has a λmax of less than 580 nm.

Claim 3

A leuco phenoxazine or phenothiazine dye represented by the formula ##STR20## wherein X is --S-- or --O--; each R is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mecapto, and Z, where Z is as defined below, wherein all aklyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and (3) Z, wherein Z is ##STR21## wherein Q is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, and Z, where Z is as defined above, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and R' is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen or halogen, and (2) alkyl or alkoxy of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or these groups substituted by up to 3 halogen atoms; and L is Z; with the proviso that R and L can have up to a total of 5 carbonyl and sulfonyl groups, and with the proviso that when X=S-- and ##STR22## then L is only ##STR23## wherein each Q can be the same or different and is independently (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, and Z, where Z is as defined above in the definition of R, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and wherein Q' is selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl group or this group substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, and Z wherein Z is as defined in the definition of R above, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms, with the proviso that if only one R is ##STR24## then L cannot also be the same ##STR25## with the proviso that when X is --O--, Z cannot be ##STR26## and with the proviso that the average value of a Taft Constant and of a Hammett Constant for the two R groups on at least one 3- or 7-position nitrogen atom is greater than 1.5 for a Taft Constant and greater than +0.15 for a Hammett Constant, and with the proviso that said leuco dye can be oxidized to a dye having a λmax of less than 580 nm.

Claim 4

A leuco phenoxazine or phenothiazine dye represented by the formula ##STR20## wherein X is --S-- or --O--; each R is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mecapto, and Z, where Z is as defined below, wherein all aklyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and (3) Z, wherein Z is ##STR21## wherein Q is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, and Z, where Z is as defined above, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and R' is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen or halogen, and (2) alkyl or alkoxy of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or these groups substituted by up to 3 halogen atoms; and L is Z; with the proviso that R and L can have up to a total of 5 carbonyl and sulfonyl groups, and with the proviso that when X=S-- and ##STR22## then L is only ##STR23## wherein each Q can be the same or different and is independently (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, and Z, where Z is as defined above in the definition of R, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and wherein Q' is selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl group or this group substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, and Z wherein Z is as defined in the definition of R above, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms, with the proviso that if only one R is ##STR24## then L cannot also be the same ##STR25## with the proviso that when X is --O--, Z cannot be ##STR26## and with the proviso that the average value of a Taft Constant and of a Hammett Constant for the two R groups on at least one 3- or 7-position nitrogen atom is greater than 1.5 for a Taft Constant and greater than +0.15 for a Hammett Constant, and with the proviso that said leuco dye can be oxidized to a dye having a λmax of less than 580 nm.

Claim 5

The phenothiazine dye according to claim 1 having the formula ##STR27## wherein Z is as defined in claim 1.

The phenoxazine dye according to claim 1 having the formula ##STR28## wherein Z is as defined in claim 1.

Claim 7

The leuco phenothiazine dye according to claim 2 having the formula ##STR29## wherein R is as previously defined.

Claim 8

The leuco phenoxazine dye according to claim 1 having the formula ##STR30## wherein R is as previously defined.

Claim 9

The leuco dye according to claim 2 wherein Z is ##STR31## and wherein each Q is independently selected from H, lower alkyl of C 1 to C 4 , or phenyl.

Claim 10

The leuco dye according to claim 2 wherein L is ##STR32## wherein Q is H, lower alkyl of C 1 to C 4 , or phenyl.

Claim 11

A phenoxazine or phenothiazine dye represented by the formula: ##STR33## wherein X is --S-- or --O--; each R is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, and Z, where Z is as defined below, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and (3) Z, wherein Z is ##STR34## wherein Q is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and R' is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen or halogen, and (2) alkyl or alkoxy of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or these groups substituted by up to 3 halogen atoms; and A is an anion; with the proviso that (1) at least one R group is Z, or (2) at least one R group on each nitrogen atom attached to the 3- and 7-ring position carbon atoms is trifluoroethyl.

Claim 12

A phenoxazine or phenothiazine dye represented by the formula: ##STR33## wherein X is --S-- or --O--; each R is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, and Z, where Z is as defined below, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and (3) Z, wherein Z is ##STR34## wherein Q is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and R' is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen or halogen, and (2) alkyl or alkoxy of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or these groups substituted by up to 3 halogen atoms; and A is an anion; with the proviso that (1) at least one R group is Z, or (2) at least one R group on each nitrogen atom attached to the 3- and 7-ring position carbon atoms is trifluoroethyl.

Claim 13

The phenoxazine or phenothiazine dye according to claim 9 wherein at least one R group is Z.

Claim 14

A phenoxazine or phenothiazine dye represented by the formula: ##STR35## wherein X is --S-- or --O--; each R is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, and Z, where Z is as defined below, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and (3) Z, wherein Z is ##STR36## wherein Q is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and R' is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen or halogen, and (2) alkyl or alkoxy of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or these groups substituted by up to 3 halogen atoms; and A is an anion; with the proviso that at least one R group on each nitrogen atom attached in the 3- and 7-ring carbon positions is Z or trifluoroethyl.

Claim 15

A phenoxazine or phenothiazine dye represented by the formula: ##STR35## wherein X is --S-- or --O--; each R is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, and Z, where Z is as defined below, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and (3) Z, wherein Z is ##STR36## wherein Q is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and R' is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen or halogen, and (2) alkyl or alkoxy of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or these groups substituted by up to 3 halogen atoms; and A is an anion; with the proviso that at least one R group on each nitrogen atom attached in the 3- and 7-ring carbon positions is Z or trifluoroethyl.

Claim 16

The phenoxazine or phenothiazine dye according to claim 9 wherein at least one R group is ##STR37##

Claim 17

A leuco phenoxazine or phenothiazine dye represented by the formula ##STR38## wherein X is --S-- or --O--; each R is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitrogen, mercapto, and Z, where Z is as defined below, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and (3) Z, wherein Z is ##STR39## wherein Q is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, and mercapto, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and R' is the same or different and is independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or these groups substituted by up to 3 halogen atoms; and L is Z; with the proviso that (1) at least one R group is Z, or (2) at least one R group on each nitrogen atom attached to the 3- and 7-ring position carbon atoms is trifluoroethyl; and with the proviso that when X=--S-- and ##STR40## then L is only ##STR41## wherein each Q can be the same or different and is independently (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, and mercapto, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and wherein Q' is selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl group or this group substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, and mercapto, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; with the proviso that if only one R is ##STR42## then L cannot also be the same ##STR43## with the proviso that the average value of a Taft Constant and of a Hammett Constant for the two R groups on both the 3- and 7-position nitrogen atoms is greater than 1.5 for a Taft Constant and greater than +0.15 for a Hammett constant, and with the proviso that said leuco dye can be oxidized to a dye having a λmax of less than 580 nm.

Claim 18

A leuco phenoxazine or phenothiazine dye represented by the formula ##STR38## wherein X is --S-- or --O--; each R is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitrogen, mercapto, and Z, where Z is as defined below, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and (3) Z, wherein Z is ##STR39## wherein Q is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, and mercapto, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and R' is the same or different and is independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or these groups substituted by up to 3 halogen atoms; and L is Z; with the proviso that (1) at least one R group is Z, or (2) at least one R group on each nitrogen atom attached to the 3- and 7-ring position carbon atoms is trifluoroethyl; and with the proviso that when X=--S-- and ##STR40## then L is only ##STR41## wherein each Q can be the same or different and is independently (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, and mercapto, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and wherein Q' is selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl group or this group substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, and mercapto, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; with the proviso that if only one R is ##STR42## then L cannot also be the same ##STR43## with the proviso that the average value of a Taft Constant and of a Hammett Constant for the two R groups on both the 3- and 7-position nitrogen atoms is greater than 1.5 for a Taft Constant and greater than +0.15 for a Hammett constant, and with the proviso that said leuco dye can be oxidized to a dye having a λmax of less than 580 nm.

Claim 19

A symmetric leuco phenoxazine or phenothiazine dye represented by the formula ##STR44## wherein when X is --O--; then, R 1 and R 3 both are H or CH 3 ; R 2 and R 4 both are C(O)CH 3 ; C(O)OCH 3 , C(O)OC 2 H 5 , C(O)CF 3 , SO 2 CH 3 , C(O)CCl 3 , C(O)CHCl 2 , C(O)CH 2 Cl, or CH 2 CF 3 , and L is C(O)CH 3 or C(O)NHC 4 H 9 ; and wherein when X is --S--, then, R 1 and R 3 both are H or CH 3 ; R 2 and R 4 both are C(O)CH 3 , C(O)OCH 3 , C(O)OC 2 H 5 , C(O)CF 3 , SO 2 CH 3 , C(O)CCl 3 , C(O)CHCl 2 , C(O)CH 2 Cl, or CH 2 CF 3 , and L is C(O)NHC 4 H 9 .

Claim 20

A symmetric leuco phenoxazine or phenothiazine dye represented by the formula ##STR44## wherein when X is --O--; then, R 1 and R 3 both are H or CH 3 ; R 2 and R 4 both are C(O)CH 3 ; C(O)OCH 3 , C(O)OC 2 H 5 , C(O)CF 3 , SO 2 CH 3 , C(O)CCl 3 , C(O)CHCl 2 , C(O)CH 2 Cl, or CH 2 CF 3 , and L is C(O)CH 3 or C(O)NHC 4 H 9 ; and wherein when X is --S--, then, R 1 and R 3 both are H or CH 3 ; R 2 and R 4 both are C(O)CH 3 , C(O)OCH 3 , C(O)OC 2 H 5 , C(O)CF 3 , SO 2 CH 3 , C(O)CCl 3 , C(O)CHCl 2 , C(O)CH 2 Cl, or CH 2 CF 3 , and L is C(O)NHC 4 H 9 .

Claim 21

A leuco phenoxazine or phenothiazine dye represented by the formula ##STR45## wherein X is --S-- or --O--; each R is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitrogen, mercapto, and Z, where Z is as defined below, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and (3) Z, wherein Z is ##STR46## wherein Q is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, and Z, where Z is as defined above, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and R' is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen or halogen, and (2) alkyl or alkoxy of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or these groups substituted by up to 3 halogen atoms; and L is Z; with the proviso that R and L can have up to a total of 5 carbonyl and sulfonyl groups, and with the proviso that when X=--S-- and ##STR47## then L is only ##STR48## wherein each Q can be the same or different and is independently (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto and Z, where Z is as defined above, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and wherein Q' is selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl group or this group substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, and Z wherein Z is as defined above, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and with the proviso that if only one R is ##STR49## then L cannot also be the same ##STR50## and with the proviso that the average value of a Taft Constant and of a Hammett Constant for the two R groups on both the 3- and 7-position nitrogen atoms is greater than 1.5 for a Taft constant and greater than +0.15 for a Hammett constant, and with the proviso that said leuco dye can be oxidized to a dye having a λmax of less than 580 nm.

Claim 22

A leuco phenoxazine or phenothiazine dye represented by the formula ##STR45## wherein X is --S-- or --O--; each R is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitrogen, mercapto, and Z, where Z is as defined below, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and (3) Z, wherein Z is ##STR46## wherein Q is independently selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, and Z, where Z is as defined above, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and R' is the same or different and is independently selected from (1) hydrogen or halogen, and (2) alkyl or alkoxy of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or these groups substituted by up to 3 halogen atoms; and L is Z; with the proviso that R and L can have up to a total of 5 carbonyl and sulfonyl groups, and with the proviso that when X=--S-- and ##STR47## then L is only ##STR48## wherein each Q can be the same or different and is independently (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl or alkyl group or these groups substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto and Z, where Z is as defined above, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and wherein Q' is selected from (1) hydrogen, (2) an unsubstituted aryl group or this group substituted by up to four groups selected from alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, nitro, mercapto, and Z wherein Z is as defined above, wherein all alkyl and alkoxy groups have 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and with the proviso that if only one R is ##STR49## then L cannot also be the same ##STR50## and with the proviso that the average value of a Taft Constant and of a Hammett Constant for the two R groups on both the 3- and 7-position nitrogen atoms is greater than 1.5 for a Taft constant and greater than +0.15 for a Hammett constant, and with the proviso that said leuco dye can be oxidized to a dye having a λmax of less than 580 nm.
