Claim 1
Independent Claim
161 words
A process for preparing a free flowing polymer pellet which comprises: (a) intimately mixing an elastomeric polymer having a glass transition temperature (Tg) of less than 0° C. with a plastic polymer having a semicrystalline or crystalline melting point of at least 10° C. higher than the softening point of the elastomer; said plastic polymer and elastomeric polymer being insoluble in one another in the melt state; (b) extruding the elastomer/plastic polymer mixture at an extrusion melt temperature above the melting point of the plastic, through a die having a die inlet and a die face said die face being the die outlet; maintaining a temperature gradient across the die from the die inlet to the die outlet, said temperature gradient being such that the polymer mixture has a melt temperature at the die outlet which is less than the extrusion melt temperature; and (c) forming pellets of the extrudate; thereby forming a pellet having a skin comprising the plastic polymer.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
36 words
The process according to claim 1 wherein the die face is maintained at a temperature of at least about 10° C. below the melting point of the plastic, thereby creating a temperature gradient across the die.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
30 words
The process according to claim 2 wherein the die face temperature is maintained by immersing the die face in water and pelletizing the extrudate as it exits the die face.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
22 words
The process according to claim 1 wherein the plastic polymer comprises about 15 to about 90 weight percent of the elastomer/plastic composition.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
22 words
The process according to claim 4 wherein the plastic polymer comprises about 15 to about 35 weight percent of the elastomer/plastic polymer.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
18 words
The process according to claim 5 wherein the plastic polymer comprises 25 weight percent of the elastomer/plastic composition.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
33 words
The process according to claim 1 wherein the plastic polymer is low density polyethylene, high density polyethylene, linear low density polyethylene, polypropylene, a crystalline copolymer of ethylene and other alphaolefin or mixtures thereof.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
29 words
The process according to claim 1 wherein the elastomer is ethylene-propylene rubber, ethylene, propylene and a non-conjugated diene, natural rubber, polyisobutzlene, halobutyl rubber, styrene butadiene rubber, or mixtures thereof.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
36 words
The process according to claim 1 wherein the elastomer is ethylene-propylene rubber or ethylene, propylene and a non-conjugated diene and the plastic polymer is polypropylene, a crystalline ethylene propylene copolymer, high density polyethylene or mixtures thereof.
