Abstract

Abstract A method of forming a wood sandwich structure comprising the steps of peeling a bolt of natural wood in spiral form to form a web of wood veneer; forming the wood veneer web into a plurality of sheets of uniform size; forming a plurality of fiberglass sheets having a size corresponding to the size of the wood veneer sheets; and bonding alternate sheets of wood veneer and fiberglass together with a resin to form a remanufactured wood composite sandwich structure comprising alternate sheets of wood veneer and fiberglass bonded together by the resin. Also disclosed is a specific wood sandwich structure for use in boat building; another specific wood sandwich structure especially suitable for use in furniture building; a method of forming a boat hull utilizing a wood sandwich structure according to the invention; and a method of forming furniture utilizing a wood sandwich structure according to the invention.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 121 words
A veneer laminate composite structure comprising: A. a sheet of wood veneer; B. another sheet of wood veneer; C. a sheet of fibrous material including fiber strands running in the plane of the sheet; and D. a resin between and bonding said sheets together with said sheet of fibrous material sandwiched between said sheets of wood veneer to form a reinforcing skeleton providing tensile strength for the composite structure, the wood veneer sheets encapsulating the strands of the sheet of fibrous material to discourage failure of the composite structure in compression and provide compressive strength for the composite structure, and the resin penetrating the interposed sheets to lock the sheets together and augment the overall unity strength of the composite structure.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 121 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
A veneer laminate composite structure according to claim 1 wherein said sheet of fibrous material comprises a sheet of fiberglass.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 17 words
A veneer laminate composite structure according to claim 2 wherein said resin comprises a liquid epoxy resin.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 38 words
A wood sandwich structure comprising: A. a uniform stack of intermixed sheets of wood veneer and other sheets of a fibrous material, each including fibrous strands running in the plane of the sheet, bonded together by a resin.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 38 words
A wood sandwich structure comprising: A. a uniform stack of intermixed sheets of wood veneer and other sheets of a fibrous material, each including fibrous strands running in the plane of the sheet, bonded together by a resin.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 16 words
A wood sandwich structure according to claim 4 wherein said other sheets comprise sheets of fiberglass.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 29 words
A wood sandwich structure according to claim 5 wherein said sheets of fiberglass and said wood veneer sheets are intermixed to form alternate layers in said wood sandwich structure.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 27 words
A wood sandwich structure according to claim 6 wherein said sheets are intermixed so that wood veneer sheets form both outer layers of said wood sandwich structure.
