Abstract

Abstract Hydrocarbons containing PCB are blended with metallic sodium at a temperature of about 130° C. and thereafter the mixture is separated into its components one of which is a hydrocarbon containing less than about 2 ppm of PCB. When the 1254 arachlor is the predominant species of the PCB, metallic sodium having a maximum dimension of about 1/4 inch to about 1/2 inch is blended with the heated hydrocarbon. When the 1254 arachlor is not the predominant species of the PCB, metallic sodium having a maximum dimension of about 20 microns to about 50 microns is blended.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 82 words
A method of removing PCB from hydrocarbons comprising the steps of heating hydrocarbons containing PCB but substantially free of water to a temperature of above 97.6° C., melting sodium by directing a portion of the heated hydrocarbon to a vessel containing said sodium, said sodium having a size greater than 20 microns, blending the melted sodium and hydrocarbons, forming a by-product until the amount of PCB is reduced to about 2 ppm or less and then separating the by-product from the hydrocarbon.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 82 words
A method of removing PCB from hydrocarbons comprising the steps of heating hydrocarbons containing PCB but substantially free of water to a temperature of above 97.6° C., melting sodium by directing a portion of the heated hydrocarbon to a vessel containing said sodium, said sodium having a size greater than 20 microns, blending the melted sodium and hydrocarbons, forming a by-product until the amount of PCB is reduced to about 2 ppm or less and then separating the by-product from the hydrocarbon.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 33 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the step of heating the hydrocarbon containing the PCB includes circulating the hydrocarbon from a reactor through a heat exchanger and back to the reactor.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 14 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the sodium in finely divided form.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method in accordance with claim 3 wherein the sodium has a maximum diameter of about 20 microns to about 50 microns.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method in accordance with claim 3 wherein the sodium has a maximum diameter of about one quarter inch to about one half inch.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 29 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the step of adding sodium includes adding about 0.03 grams of sodium for each ppm of PCB per gallon of hydrocarbon.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 14 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the temperature is about 130° C.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 34 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 include sampling the hydrocarbon to determine which species of PCB is predominant, then the size of the sodium to be melted by the heated hydrocarbon is determined.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 17 words
A method in accordance with claim 8 wherein the sampled hydrocarbons are analyzed with a gas chromatograph.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 40 words
A method in accordance with claim 8 wherein, when the 1254 arachlor is the predominant species of the PCB, sodium having a maximum dimension of about one quarter inch to about one half inch is melted by the heated hydrocarbons.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 39 words
A method in accordance with claim 8 wherein, when the 1254 arachlor is not the predominant species of the PCB, sodium having a maximum dimension of about 20 microns to about 50 microns is melted by the heated hydrocarbons.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 16 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein said by-product is sodium chloride and phenyl polymer.
