Abstract

Abstract An evaporative cooler is disclosed which incorporates a media having a plurality of generally plate-like structures. The plates include a plurality of fins having slot-like depressions dimensioned thin enough to exhibit capillarity, yet thick enough to exhibit good heat transfer characteristics when filled with chilled water. The capillary slots are arranged to effect distribution of the water over substantially the entire surface of the plates forming the media.

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 117 words
A generally plate-like structure for use as a media element in a wetted surface air-to-air heat exchanger comprising a water-impervious sheet for separating a first stream of cooling air and water from a second stream of air to be cooled, said sheet formed to have a plurality of fins having an outer surface extending outwardly into the second stream of air, each fin formed to contain a slot-like depression defining an inner surface of the fin generally similar to the outer surface of the fin, the depression being dimensioned thin enough to exhibit capillarity for drawing water from the first stream into the depression, and thick enough to exhibit good heat transfer characteristics when filled with water.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 117 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 134 words
An air-to-air heat exchanger media for an indirect evaporative cooler comprising a water-impervious first plate composed of a plastic material, the plate including a series of generally horizontal slots having a sufficiently small vertical dimension so as to exhibit capillarity, and a second plate bonded to the first plate in a spaced relation to form a first channel for allowing water and a first stream of air to flow between the first plate and second plate, a third plate bonded to the first plate in a spaced relation to form a second channel for allowing a second stream of air to flow between the first plate and third plate, the series of generally horizontal slots of the first plate extending into the second channel as a series of generally horizontally disposed heat transfer fins.
Claim 4
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 143 words
In an indirect evaporative air cooler through which a first and second stream of air can pass for cooling the second stream of air, including means for distributing a cooling liquid to contact the first stream of air, an improved media comprising a plurality of plates, each plate having a series of ridges to maintain adjacent plates in a spaced relation, the plates being joined together to form a series of first channels through which the cooling liquid and the first stream of air can pass, and a series of second channels through which the second stream of air can pass, each plate having a plurality of elongated depressions having a sufficiently small dimension across the depressions so as to exhibit capillarity to draw water into the elongated depressions, the elongated depressions forming a series of elongated fins extending into the second channel.
Claim 6
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 108 words
A media element for use in a wetted surface evaporative cooler comprising a plurality of sheets arranged in opposed pairs so as to define a plurality of first, vertically extending channels through which cooling air and water can flow and a plurality of second, horizontally directed channels through which air to be cooled can flow, each sheet including a plurality of slot-like depressions dimensioned thin enough to exhibit capillary, the slot-like depressions being arranged to effect distribution of the first channel water over substantially the entire surface of the sheet in the first channel, and to extend into the second channel as a plurality of heat transfer fins.
