Abstract

Abstract A construction and method of producing an elongated underwater acoustic array includes a plurality of interconnected hydrophones and circuit modules protected by a plastic foam cushioning sheath, covered with a tough, essentially acoustically transparent hose-like jacket and containing a plurality of aramid fiber ropes as strength members to carry the tensile loads on the array. An elongated tube-like fabric retaining member is interposed between the sheath and the exterior hose jacket which is longitudinally stitched to provide a plurality of spaced parallel tubes, each of which is of just sufficient diameter to contain one of said strength members. The strength members are terminated at a connector at each end of the array, and a spacer member is placed near each connector to spread the strength member ropes to the desired diameter. The spacer members and the adjacent ends of the retaining members are each cemented to the strength member ropes.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
A construction for an elongated towed underwater acoustic array as claimed in claim 1 wherein said strength members are aramid fiber ropes.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 33 words
A construction for an elongated towed underwater acoustic array as claimed in claim 2 wherein said retaining member is of nylon material and is cemented at its ends to said aramid fiber ropes.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 36 words
A construction for an elongated towed underwater acoustic array as claimed in claim 1 wherein said array includes spacer members spreading said strength members near said connectors, said strength members being cemented to said spacer members.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 26 words
A construction for an elongated towed underwater acoustic array as claimed in claim 1 wherein said hose-like jacket is of material which is substantially acoustically transparent.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 196 words
A method of constructing an elongated towed underwater acoustic array which comprises electrically interconnecting a plurality of hydrophones and electronic modules, covering said hydrophones, electronic modules and electrical connections with a substantially continuous sheath of protective plastic foam material, providing a plurality of strength members to carry the tensile load on said array, and enclosing said hydrophones, electronic modules, electrical connectors, said sheath and said strength members in a tube-like jacket of tough synthetic material such as polyurethane, characterized in that said strength members are contained and separated within said tube-like jacket through the steps of providing a tube-like fabric retaining member slightly shorter than said tube-like jacket, longitudinally stitching or seaming said retaining member at a plurality of locations to provide a structure with a large center tube and a plurality of spaced parallel tubes of small diameter and feeding said strength members through said small diameter tubes, feeding said sheath and its contents through said large center tube, securing said retaining member in said array to prevent axial movement of said retaining member relative to said array, and terminating said strength members and electrical connections at a connector at each end of said array.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 196 words
