Abstract

Abstract A process and composition which produces a permanently water wettable, abrasion-resistant film on a surface is disclosed. The composition comprises a mixture of an aqueous colloidal dispersion of carboxylic acid functional polymer; an aqueous colloidal dispersion of surface hydroxylated silica, the amount of hydroxylated silica to carboxylic acid functional polymer being sufficient to cause the formation of canals in the cured film; an amine to render the carboxylic acid functional polymer water soluble; a curing agent for the carboxylic acid functional polymer; an optionally, a wetting agent. In the process, the composition is applied to a surface to form a film, and the film is dried and/or heated at a temperature sufficient to harden or cure the film. A preferred carboxylic acid functional polymer is acrylic resin .
