Claim 1
Independent Claim
78 words
Method for reducing the content of halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons in a hydrocarbon solution which comprises heating under agitation a hydrocarbon solution having therein up to about 50,000 parts per million of said solution of halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon as a contaminant with a nonaqueous alkaline reactant in a sulfoxide solvent, said alkaline reactant selected from the group consisting of (i) an alkali metal alcoholate, (ii) a mixture of an alkali metal hydroxide and an alcohol or (iii) mixtures thereof.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
14 words
The method of claim 1 in which said hydrocarbon solution is a transformer oil.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
15 words
The method of claim 1 in which said halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon is a polychlorinated biphenyl.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
14 words
The method of claim 1 in which the sulfoxide is a lower alkyl sulfoxide.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
12 words
The method of claim 4 in which the sulfoxide is dimethyl sulfoxide.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
21 words
The method of claim 1 in which the reaction is conducted at a reaction temperature from about 25° to 200° C.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
20 words
The method of claim 6 in which the reaction is conducted at temperatures from about 90° C. to 120° C.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
