Claim 1
Independent Claim
148 words
In a guided moving warhead having an elongated penetrator rod therewithin, means for aligning the rod with the velocity vector of the moving warhead, said aligning means comprising: two pairs of wings pivotally mounted about an outer surface of the warhead, each of the first pair of wings being free to pivot about a first axis, and each of the second pair of wings being free to pivot about a second axis orthogonal to the first axis; two-axis gimbal means for mounting the penetrator rod within the interior of the warhead, said first and second axes constituting two orthogonal axes of the gimbal means; and means for coupling the two pairs of wings to the two orthogonal gimbal axes, respectively; wherein aerodynamic forces created by movement of the warhead align the wings with the relative wind, thereby causing the penetrator rod to align with the warhead's velocity vector.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
36 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the warhead has a generally elongated shape, and the gimbal is mounted within the warhead so that the two axes are each orthogonal to the longitudinal axis of the warhead.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
56 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein each wing is coupled to the gimbal via a portion of one of said gearing means aligned along one of said first and second axes, wherein said coupling means comprises two gearing means, wherein the gearing means compensate for the effects of crossflow introduced by the shape of the warhead.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
61 words
The apparatus of claim 3 wherein each gearing means comprises two gears: a first gear associated with a wing, and a second gear associated with the gimbal; wherein the gear ratio of the two gears is equal to the expected ratio of the velocity of the relative wind to the velocity of the component of the crossflow orthogonal to said wing.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
12 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the warhead is a guided projectile.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
12 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the warhead is a guided missile.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
60 words
The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the wings are folded against the outer surface of the missile during an initial phase of the missile's flight; and the wings are deployed during a subsequent phase of the missile's flight, said deployment consisting of substantially 90° rotation so that the wings are then substantially orthogonal to the outer surface of the missile.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
22 words
The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said 90° rotation is imparted by a torsionally and compressionally preloaded spring associated with each wing.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
23 words
The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the wings are held in place during said initial flight phase by means of a passive constraint.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
44 words
The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the passive constraint is a partially cured shrink tubing which further shrinks to the point of tensile failure in response to aerodynamic heating associated with the missile's flight, thereby allowing the wings to rotate into their deployed position.
