Abstract

Abstract In a stretch film wrapping machine wherein packages are elevated into a stretched sheet of film and underfolded, an improved control system monitors the operation of the wrapping machine to detect a jam condition and stop the machine for such jam conditions. A microprocessor monitors clock counts generated by the main drive shaft of the wrapping machine to detect a jam condition. Microprocessor operating cycles are counted between consecutive clock counts generated. If the drive shaft hesitates for a defined period of time, the counter overflows indicating a jam condition. The system also provides for operating the film wrapping machine in a reverse direction in discrete steps within a defined and limited range of the machine operating cycle to thereby facilitate removal of jams. To further facilitate jam removal, the rear film underfolder and package pusher are mounted to be moved away from the machine to thereby remove pressure from packages jammed beneath the rear underfolder.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 195 words
In a film wrapping machine including means for positioning a section of film for wrapping a generally rectangular package, a collapsible elevator for raising a package to be wrapped into said section of film, folder means having side underfolders and a rear underfolder for folding the film under three sides of a package while simultaneously collapsing said elevator to transfer support of a package from said elevator to said folder means, and pusher means for completing the wrapping of a package by ejecting the package from the machine, a jam detection and removal improvement comprising a control system including means for monitoring the operation of said wrapping machine to detect a jam condition and for stopping said machine upon detection of a jam condition, said control system further including means for operating said film wrapping machine in a reverse direction in discrete steps within a defined and limited range of the operating cycle of said machine to avoid the elevator collapse portion of said cycle whereby said film wrapping machine is rapidly stopped upon the occurrence of a jam condition and removal of the jam condition is facilitated by incremental reverse operation of said machine.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 195 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 127 words
The jam detection and removal improvement of claim 1 further comprising: connection means for coupling said rear underfolder to said machine so that said rear underfolder can be moved away from a package underfolding position; first resilient means connected to said rear underfolder for maintaining said rear underfolder in said package underfolding position; and hinge means for connecting said pusher means to said machine so that said pusher means can be pivotally rotated away from a package pushing position whereby the removal of a package which jams between said rear underfolder and portions of said machine resulting in the jam stoppage of said machine is facilitated by moving said rear underfolder and said pusher means away from said package against the force of said first resilient means.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 178 words
In a film wrapping machine including means for positioning a section of film for wrapping a generally rectangular package, an elevator for raising a package to be wrapped into said section of film, folder means having side underfolders and a rear underfolder for wrapping the film around three sides of a package, and pusher means for completing the wrapping of a package by ejecting the package from the machine, the improvement comprising: connection means for coupling said rear underfolder to said machine so that said rear underfolder can be moved away from a package underfolding position; first resilient means connected to said rear underfolder for maintaining said rear underfolder in said package underfolding position; and hinge means for connecting said pusher means to said machine so that said pusher means can be pivotally rotated away from a package pushing position whereby a package which jams between said rear underfolder and portions of said machine can be removed by moving said rear underfolder and said pusher means away from said package against the force of said first resilient means.
Claim 5
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 43 words
The improvement of claim 2 or 3 wherein said rear underfolder comprises first and second support arms with at least two cylindrical shafts mounted for rotation therebetween and said first resilient means comprises compression springs coupled to said first and second support arms.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 66 words
The improvement of claim 4 wherein said pusher means includes lifter blocks positioned adjacent to said rear underfolder, said lifter blocks being formed to rotate said pusher means when said rear underfolder is moved by contact between said rear underfolder and said lifter blocks and also to prevent interference between said rear underfolder and said pusher means when said underfolder is moved away from said machine.
