Abstract

Abstract A nesting drum and a method of making the same is provided. The drum comprises a shell which has a necking at the bottom to accommodate a double seam between the shell and the closure. The closure has a raised circular center and a plurality of ribs which re-enforce the shell to resist large loads.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 124 words
A method of making a nestable drum comprising: providing a cylindrical shell with one end having a first diameter; flaring out a portion of said one end to form an edge; providing a circular plate-shaped closure with a raised center, a disk, and a cylindrical side connecting said center to said disk, said side having a second diameter smaller than said first diameter and a plurality of ribs extending radially away from said center to form a circle having an outer diameter equal to said first diameter; associating the shell with the closure so that the edge coincides with the disk and the center and the ribs are disposed within the shell; and curling the edge and the disk together to form a seam.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 37 words
The method of claim 1 wherein after the association of the shell and the closure, the open end and the ribs are reduced to form an annular space around the open end and to reinforce said seam.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 24 words
The method of claim 2 wherein the shell is also necked in radially above the edge to form an annular cavity for the seam.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
The method of claim 3 also comprising compressing the seam radially inward into the annular cavity.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 65 words
The method of claim 4 wherein the curling is accomplished by affixing the closure and the shell to a turntable and pressing said edge and disk against a first roller which has at least one annular groove with a circular side whereby the edge and the disk are curled within the annular groove of the roller to form a seam which is cross sectionally circular.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 32 words
The method of claim 5 wherein the first roller also has an annular shoulder so that as the annual groove curls from the seam, the shoulder forms the necking of the shell.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 26 words
The method of claim 3 further comprising of pressing the cross-sectionally circular seam against a second roller to flatten the circular seam into a double seam.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 107 words
A method of producing a nestable drum comprising: providing a shell with at least one open end having a first diameter; providing a closure with a raised center and a cylindrical side having a second diameter, said closure being formed with a plurality of ribs extending radially from said cylindrical side which generate a circle of said first diameter; associating said closure to said shell by axially inserting said raised center into said open end; reducing said open end and said ribs to form an annular space around said open end; and, forming a seam between said closure and said shell whereby said ribs reinforce said seam.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 107 words
A method of producing a nestable drum comprising: providing a shell with at least one open end having a first diameter; providing a closure with a raised center and a cylindrical side having a second diameter, said closure being formed with a plurality of ribs extending radially from said cylindrical side which generate a circle of said first diameter; associating said closure to said shell by axially inserting said raised center into said open end; reducing said open end and said ribs to form an annular space around said open end; and, forming a seam between said closure and said shell whereby said ribs reinforce said seam.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method of claim 8 wherein said reducing and said seam forming is performed simultaneously.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method of claim 8 wherein said seam is formed within said annular space.
