Anthraquinone dye and liquid crystal composition containing the same

Claim 2

An anthraquinone dye represented by the formula (I) ##STR110## wherein R 1 is a trans-4-alkylcyclohexyl group, a trans-4-cyclohexylcyclohexyl group, a trans-4-alkylcyclohexylcyclohexyl group, a p-(trans-4-alkylcyclohexyl)phenyl group, or an aryl group which may be substituted with an alkyl group, or an alkoxy group; and R 2 is an alkyl group which may be substituted with an alkoxy group or a cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group which may be substituted with an alkyl group, an alkoxy group or an alkoxyalkyl group, with the proviso that when R 1 is a substituted aryl group, at least one of R 1 and R 2 is as follows: R 1 is ##STR111## wherein R 3 is a C 5-9 alkyl group or alkoxy group; and R 2 is a C 5-18 alkyl group, ##STR112## wherein R 4 is a C 1-9 alkyl group, alkoxy group, ##STR113## or ##STR114## wherein R 5 is a C 1-9 alkyl group.

Claim 3

An anthraquinone dye as claimed in claim 1, which is represented by the formula (I-2) ##STR115## wherein R 11 is a trans-4-alkylcyclohexyl group, trans-4-cyclohexylcyclohexyl group, trans-4-alkylcyclohexylcyclohexyl group, or p-(trans-4-alkylcyclohexyl)phenyl group; and R 12 is an alkyl group which may be substituted with an alkoxy group, or a cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group which may be substituted with an alkyl group, alkoxy group or alkylcyclohexyl group.

Claim 4

An anthraquinone dye as claimed in claim 1, which is represented by the formula (I-3) ##STR116## wherein R 13 is a trans-4-alkylcyclohexyl group and R 14 is an aralkyl or aryl group which may be substituted with an alkyl group or alkoxy group.

Claim 5

In a liquid crystal composition comprising at least one host liquid crystal and at least one pleochroic dye dissolved as a guest in said at least one host liquid crystal, wherein said at least one pleochroic dye includes at least one anthraquinone dye represented by the formula (I) ##STR117## wherein R 1 is a trans-4-alkylcyclohexyl group, a trans-4-cyclohexylcyclohexyl group, a trans-4-alkylcyclohexylcyclohexyl group, a p-(trans-4-alkylcyclohexyl)phenyl group, an alkyl group which may be substituted with an alkoxy group or an alkylamino group, or an aralkyl or aryl group which may be substituted with an alkyl group, an aralkyl group, an aryl group, an alkoxy group, or an alkylamino group; and R 2 is an alkyl group which may be substituted with an alkoxy group, an alkylamino group, an cycloalkyl group, or an alkylcycloalkyl group; or a cycloalkyl, aralkyl, or aryl group which may be substituted with an alkyl group, an alkoxy group, an alkylamino group, an cycloalkyl group, an alkylcycloalkyl group, an aryl group, an aralkyl group, or an alkoxyalkyl group, with the proviso that when R 1 is a substituted alkyl group, aralkyl group, or aryl group, at least one of R 1 and R 2 is as follows: R 1 is a C 5-18 alkyl group, ##STR118## or ##STR119## wherein R 3 is a C 5-9 alkyl group or alkoxy group; R 2 is a C 5-18 alkyl group, ##STR120## wherein R 4 is a C 1-9 alkyl group, alkoxy group, ##STR121## or ##STR122## wherein R 5 is a hydrogen atom, C 1-9 alkyl group, or alkoxy group.

Claim 6

In a liquid crystal composition comprising at least one host liquid crystal and at least one pleochroic dye dissolved as a guest in said at least one host liquid crystal, wherein said at least one pleochroic dye includes at least one anthraquinone dye represented by the formula (I) ##STR117## wherein R 1 is a trans-4-alkylcyclohexyl group, a trans-4-cyclohexylcyclohexyl group, a trans-4-alkylcyclohexylcyclohexyl group, a p-(trans-4-alkylcyclohexyl)phenyl group, an alkyl group which may be substituted with an alkoxy group or an alkylamino group, or an aralkyl or aryl group which may be substituted with an alkyl group, an aralkyl group, an aryl group, an alkoxy group, or an alkylamino group; and R 2 is an alkyl group which may be substituted with an alkoxy group, an alkylamino group, an cycloalkyl group, or an alkylcycloalkyl group; or a cycloalkyl, aralkyl, or aryl group which may be substituted with an alkyl group, an alkoxy group, an alkylamino group, an cycloalkyl group, an alkylcycloalkyl group, an aryl group, an aralkyl group, or an alkoxyalkyl group, with the proviso that when R 1 is a substituted alkyl group, aralkyl group, or aryl group, at least one of R 1 and R 2 is as follows: R 1 is a C 5-18 alkyl group, ##STR118## or ##STR119## wherein R 3 is a C 5-9 alkyl group or alkoxy group; R 2 is a C 5-18 alkyl group, ##STR120## wherein R 4 is a C 1-9 alkyl group, alkoxy group, ##STR121## or ##STR122## wherein R 5 is a hydrogen atom, C 1-9 alkyl group, or alkoxy group.
