Claim 1
Independent Claim
140 words
A method of assembling a brush box sub-assembly in an electric motor having a commutator, said brush box sub-assembly comprising a brush box having at least two opposed side walls, a brush located within the brush box, resilient means stressed between the brush box and the brush for urging the brush outwardly in a longitudinal direction from within the brush box, and said two opposed side walls being stressed to grip and hold against movement said brush, said method comprising the steps of: inserting the brush box into said motor; separating said opposed side walls sufficiently as the brush box is so inserted to enable said brush to move in said brush box; and allowing said resilient means to urge said brush outwardly of said brush box into contact with said commutator as said opposed side walls are so separated.

Claim 3
Independent Claim
223 words
A method of assembling an electric motor, comprising the steps of: press fitting a first bearing into a first end cap; supporting the first end cap; locating an end face of a stator against the end cap; inserting a rotor having a shaft into the stator with one end of the shaft passing into said bearing; measuring the distance between the opposite end face of the stator and a location on the shaft; positioning a second end cap containing a second bearing over the other end of the shaft; advancing the second end cap relative to said other end of the shaft to engage said shaft in said second bearing and until said second end cap is located against said opposite end face of the stator; pressing the first bearing into the first end cap in the direction of the second end cap an amount related to said measured distance to determine the end float of said shaft; and including the step of inserting a brush box sub-assembly into one of the end caps, the brush box sub-assembly having a brush box with at least two opposed side walls stressed to grip and hold against movement a brush, the opposed side walls being separated sufficiently as the brush box sub-assembly is inserted to enable the brush to move freely in the brush box.
Claim 4
Independent Claim

Claim 5
Dependent Claim
49 words
The method of claim 2, wherein the brush box has a slot between said opposed side walls and said one end cap has a protruding member, said protruding member being forced in said slot during insertion of said brush box sub-assembly to effect the separation of said side walls.
