Abstract

Abstract A cleaning system for flexible disk equipment or the like. The system includes a cleaning disk made of an absorbent and porous fibrous material which has an area substantially saturated with a liquid cleaning solution. The cleaning disk is rotatably supported within a flat jacket. The jacket includes opposed openings on either side so as to expose a portion of the cleaning disk to enable the disk to come into contact with a magnetic head or heads. At least one of the openings is enlarged to expose a relatively large portion of the surface of the cleaning disk, so as to facilitate complete saturation of an area of the cleaning disk with a liquid cleaning solution while leaving a portion of the cleaning disk dry. The jacket containing the disk is placed within a flexible disk system which rotates the saturated disk, thus causing the magnetic head(s) to be cleaned in a non-abrasive fashion with a wet, dry, wet action. An improved jacket for use with a thickened cleaning disk is also disclosed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 167 words
A device for cleaning a magnetic head in flexible disk systems, comprising: a cleaning disk made of an absorbent and porous material and having a disk surface, and adapted to be saturated with a liquid cleaning fluid; and a substantially flat jacket rotatably supporting said cleaning disk within its interior, said jacket including an enlarged opening in a side wall of the jacket for facilitating saturation of a substantial portion of the cleaning disk with cleaning fluid while the disk is in said jacket, wherein said opening exposes at least one eighth of the surface of the cleaning disk and is bounded by a straight portion lying along a chord of the cleaning disk and at least one additional portion generally corresponding to the periphery of the cleaning disk, said straight portion being further defined as a chord of a circle whose center coincides with the center of the cleaning disk whereby said straight portion assists in maintaining the disk planar in the area of the opening.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 55 words
The device of claim 1 wherein said jacket is formed of a pair of substantially flat panels and wherein at least one of said panels includes a cavity within which the cleaning disk rests, said cavity providing increased space within the jacket so as to facilitate free rotation of the cleaning disk within the jacket.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 13 words
The device of claim 2 wherein both of said sides include a cavity.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 174 words
A device for cleaning a magnetic head in flexible disk systems, comprising: a flexible cleaning disk (having a disk surface and) made of an absorbent and porous material, and adapted to be saturated with a liquid cleaning fluid; and a substantially flat jacket rotatably supporting said cleaning disk within its interior, said jacket including an enlarged opening in a side wall of the jacket to expose at least one eighth of the surface of the cleaning disk to facilitate saturation of a substantial portion of the cleaning disk with cleaning fluid while the disk is in the jacket, wherein the opening is bounded by a straight portion lying along a chord of the cleaning disk and a curved portion corresponding to the periphery of the cleaning disk, said straight portion being further defined as a chord of a circle whose center coincides with the center of the cleaning disk, whereby the jacket supports the cleaning disk in a substantially planar fashion to thereby prevent interference between the cleaning disk and the flexible disk system.
Claim 6
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 41 words
The device of claim 4, wherein the jacket includes at least one bridge member extending across the opening from the straight portion to the curved portion and in contact with the disk to thereby provide additional support to the cleaning disk.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 13 words
The device of claim 5, wherein there are two of said bridge members.
